Team Canada must replace Alex Pietrangelo on their blue line before the 4 Nations Tournament gets underway. They have time, and it sounds like they’ll take it. Still, a frontrunner has emerged already and it’s believed that the job is Drew Doughty‘s to lose.

Alex Pietrangelo pulled out of the 4 Nations Tournament so he could deal with an ailment/injury. It’s being reported that he’s rehabbing, but he played a game for the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday night and Elliotte Friedman is reporting that Pietrangelo won’t have to miss any NHL games as a result of removing himself from the 4 Nations.

Still, Team Canada will need to find someone to fill his spot.

There are plenty of solid choices, including Evan Bouchard, MacKenzie Weegar, Dougie Hamilton, and Jakob Chychrun, to name a few.

Drew Doughty’s Job to Lose?

Friedman noted on Sunday, “At this time, Team Canada is still working on naming Pietrangelo’s replacement. The deadline is Feb 11, the day before Canada plays Sweden. But the desire is to do it before team arrives in Montreal.”

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun explained:

“Team Canada will take its time evaluating its options to replace Alex Pietrangelo who pulled out of 4 Nations. Probably have until just before they arrive in Montreal in 2 weeks. Likely preference is RHD but management is evaluating a group of players and will take best player at the time that fits what they need.”

He added, “Drew Doughty’s imminent return looms large. He should be playing his first game with the Kings within the next 3-5 games. If he can show he’s up to speed in time for 4 Nations, has a real shot at being the guy. But we’ll see.”

Darren Dreger also chimed in and said, “Drew Doughty is expected to return to the Kings in the next 3-5 games. His health is great, but needs time to get back up to speed. Hence, Canada is slow playing a decision in replacing Petro.” LeBrun also thinks Doughty is a leading candidate.
