The Calvin Problem

Yep, Quick is NOT going to relinquish the starter role as long as his body holds up, and even then, only very reluctantly. He took the starter job from Bernier in 2009 and has never looked back.

While i agree that he is never going to willingly relinquish the starter role, he didn't take it from Bernier. If anything LaBarbera was the goalie of the time with 45 games started in 07-08. Then 08-09 when Quick took on the mantle LaBarbera was also getting beat out by Ersberg (who'd come on late in 07-08 with 2 shut outs in 13 starts) and there was honestly people that weren't sure if Ersberg or Quick would be the answer. Don't get me wrong, LGK had already anointed Bernier by that point but DL's comments made it pretty clear that he may have realized what he had in Quick far before anyone else did. I don't blame you for forgetting LaBarbera, who wouldn't want to, but he was also hyped as an AHL MVP at one point too.

True. I think what he is saying is that Bernier was the hier apparent who Quick beat out by getting his opportunity and running with it. Bernier was only the 2nd time the Kings have taken a goalie in the first round and there was zero doubt, at the time, that he was pegged as the Kings future starting goalie and hyped as a future All-Star. Quick was simply pegged as a placeholder initially but just kept succeeding and caused the Kings leadership to rethink things.

To your point, Labs and Garon were both pretty hyped when we picked them up but I don't think there was ever any doubt that they were not going to be top end goalies in the league.
