The Calvin Problem

Cal is a good goalie. He's just lost his game but there's no reason why he can't get it back. Now the question is can he get it back while still playing for this team? He wouldn't be the first goalie to need a change of scenery to rediscover his game. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing Blake go find another struggling goalie with around a 5M cap hit and see if there's any appetite for a swap.

It is a tricky thing because the NHL doesn't allow a goalie to work it out. If he goes in net the way he went in last time, he will get exposed and have a bad game and that sets him back some more. Feel for him, there's no doubt he has the skill to do it, but his next game is likely going to be him telling himself "don't screw up" etc and then that can make you screw up more etc. I'd play Quick for a while here and try to ease him back in slowly. No easy answers though.

The huge problem here is Quick is not young and has more and more often gotten injured groin and back from overwork. He needs to alternate if the Kings have any hope of using him in the latter quarter of the season. He looked good last night but it takes a toll that needs a couple days rest. If Peterson isn't the 20-40 game goalie we need to relieve Quick, then bring in someone else.

This seems like a Catch-22 situation. I agree that he can't go in games playing like he has. They could work with him in practices which would help. But the only way for him to get through his problems is to play & to regain his confidence. But if he doesn't have success it could get worse. One thing the team could do is to be more responsible defensively. I know they're trying to generate more offense especially from defensemen. But if there's any way to still do that while tightening up a little more defensively, that could help.

Here's the solution to the Calvin Conundrum.

Well, Villalta and Copley are both playing very well in Ontario (so far...but that team is loaded, relatively speaking)...could be an idea to bring one of them up after they have more knowledge about their form down there and send Cal back down for a...uh, conditioning stint to gain confidence (hopefully).

Totally agree. I meant more like two weeks of just Quick and then try Petersen, but even two week straight could be rough, as you said, without proper rest time.

Fox made a comment during the Tampa game that Mcellan and the team are focusing in predictability in the defensive zone (which I called out previously is exactly what Petersen needs to succeed). Given this I expect Cal to turn it around pretty quickly as he doesn't need the D to be great in front of him, he just needs to know where they, and the team, will be when he forms his cerebral equation. To me he is a position first goalie always calculating and playing probabilities; the more accurate data he has the better he will do. Totally the opposite of Quick who embraces the chaos and relies heavily on reflexes and instinct.

There's only one answer:

How dare you thirst trap me with Dr. Sharron and then not expect me to go on a forty -five word rant about the AppleTv and Ted Lasso season 3 release date beef. Bastards.

To be continued on the media board.

The goalie situation: dunno I've been a fan prior to 2012, so yawn. It will probably get worse before it gets better. (((The Black Keys-I got mine))))

Speaking of getting worse, to day what do you think Blake and Luc's Waterloo are?

Blake: Kovalchuk
Luc: the in game experience?

...at least the Kings aren't stuck with Jack Campbell's deal!

Huge win by Petersen, one of the biggest in his career. The Kings will win 10 straight with him in net.

Cal played well yesterday afternoon. That 1st goal wasn’t that great but only allowing 2 is terrific. If he gives up 1 bad goal & still wins I’ll take that. It helps a lot when the team plays better defense in front of him.

Cal had a good night, not great, but good. First goal is on him, but he kept it to two. A good game was enough for a win. The hope would be he can start the next one and build on it - because that would do two things, get him heading in the right direction and make Quick have to work to get the job back.

From Yahoo Fantasy player notes:

Quick stopped 31 of 32 shots in Thursday's 2-1 overtime win over the Blackhawks.

Advice: Quick and Petr Mrazek engaged in a goaltending duel for much of the contest. The 36-year-old Quick prevailed thanks to Kevin Fiala's goal with 1.4 seconds left in overtime. This was Quick's third straight win, and he's allowed five goals in that span. He's now 6-4-1 with a 2.83 GAA and a .904 save percentage through 12 contests. He's started four games in a row, so it appears the veteran is the hot hand, relegating Cal Petersen to a backup role.

Yep, Quick is NOT going to relinquish the starter role as long as his body holds up, and even then, only very reluctantly. He took the starter job from Bernier in 2009 and has never looked back.

Additionally he has shown that the more games he plays in a season, the better he gets so unless the King coaching staff force Petersen into the lineup, he may be riding the bench for quite awhile.

Would also be great to see Quick lead all US born goalies in wins by the end of the season and cement himself as a future HoF'er.
