On Monday August 15, 2016, during a meeting of the Simi Valley City Council, AMR Ventura County FTO Charles Arevalo was presented with a lifesaving award for his actions at the scene of a motorcycle collision involving on-duty Simi Valley Police Officer Tom Carney.
Charles was off-duty at the time of the collision and witnessed Officer Carney being struck by a pickup truck while engaged in an enforcement action. Officer Carney received serious, life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision, however, due in part to Charles' immediate action, Officer Carney survived the collision and was able to return home to his family after a lengthy hospital stay.
