I know topics such as this are not popular with the LGK mods, but I wanted to vent about Evander Kane, so here goes...
...I don't like Evander Kane. In fact, there's absolutely nothing remotely positive I can say about the man. In my opinion, he should not be playing hockey at the NHL level. Too much baggage and too many off-the-ice issues. But some teams just don't care about these issues. They'd sign Charles Manson if they thought he'd help them win a Stanley Cup. And it's like this with a lot of teams in all the major sports.
In the NFL you have teams such at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Cleveland Browns, that will sign anyone with a sordid past, as long as that player gives them a better chance to win, image be damned. The Bucs gladly signed notorious scumbags such as Ndamukong Suh and Antonio Brown, with mixed results. While Suh has miraculously managed to stay out of trouble, Brown finally wore out his welcome and is long gone.
Kareem Hunt was caught on camera kicking a woman while she was on the ground, and he' s currently the starting running back for the Cleveland Browns. The Browns also signed DeShaun Watson to be their starting quarterback, even though more than 20 civil lawsuits have been filed against him, accusing the newly acquired quarterback of inappropriate conduct and sexual assault.
In the MLB, Trevor Bauer is currently serving the longest suspension in league history (324 games) for violating the league domestic abuse policy, even though it appears he may be the victim here, based on the text messages sent and received by his accuser, who clearly had ulterior motives (cash, lot of cash). Bauer is appealing his suspension and the first hearing before an arbitrator is scheduled for next week. But inside sources say his current team, the LA Dodgers, want no part of his sordid past on their ledger, and are willing to eat his $102,000,000.00 contract.
So if that's true, good for the Dodgers...except it appears Bauer was a victim of his own stupidity and was clearly being set-up by the alleged victim. But not all teams are like the Dodgers. They do not care about optics or appearances. They want to win. At all cost.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was accused of sexual assault in Lake Tahoe, but settled out-of-court with the woman and continued his career and the Pittsburgh fans couldn't care less. The list goes on and on and on...
...anyway, back to Evander Kane, who 30 days ago settled an off-ice incident (out-of-court) with a Buffalo area woman that accused him of assault That was swept under the rug fairly briskly. This guy has more dirt on his resume than any professional athlete I can recall.

My point here is each individual league treats these cases quite differently. Bauer has been found guilty of nothing by law enforcement, but his career, for all practical purposes, may be over, even if he wins his appeal.
And no way should Kareem Hunt be playing in the NFL, but he's the star of the Browns, even though he was caught on camera kicking a woman while she was lying on the ground.
And today MLB suspended Matt Harvey 60 games for his admission that he provided opioids to Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, who died of an overdose.

Needless to say, Bauer is less than thrilled with the length of Harvey's suspension.

The penalties for players off-the field incidents in any major sport should not be so disproportionate. If Evander Kane was a baseball player, I think its safe to say his career would be over. Same for Watson and Brown and Hunt...yet Harvey, a baseball player, who admitted to lying under oath in Federal Court, receives a suspension of 60 games compared to Bauer's 324 game suspension. And Harvey's conduct led to the death of a teammate.
None of this makes any sense. And I will always root against ANY team that enables a player such as Evander Kane by signing him to a fat contract, knowing full well the extent of his illustrious past. I don't think the LA Kings organization would have let Slava Voynov continue to play for the team, even if he had been acquitted of the charges. But it wouldn't surprise me if another team signed Voynov immediately had he been allowed to remain in the country (I'm looking at you Edmonton).
In my opinion, it stinks to high-hell...but as the say: Winning is the best perfume. But when I see Kane out there on the ice gooning it up and laughing like a hyena, it still smells pretty damn bad to me. And I don't care who wins the Cup, as long as it's not the Edmonton Oilers.
