The Star Wars thread

Not sure if you guys saw my ticket exchange thread, but I have two extras tomorrow (Sat) at Century City AMC at 3pm if anyone here needs tickets!
 
One thing about the prequels; at least they didn't need to have a super-weapon in the story like in IV, VI, & VII.

IV, ok fine.
It was the original.
 
Critique proof. So much was done right, any minor complaints are forgivable. From the screen wipes to the practical creatures it was the perfect mix of 'something borrowed, something new'. JJ did a masterful job when you consider just how difficult this was always gonna be to pull off. So many people to please, and, regardless of your feelings, I can't imagine anyone leaves/left the theater 'hating it' or not wanting more. So go ahead and complain. Your argument is invalid.
 
Was it worth waiting 32 1/2 years for??? YES!!!!

Great mix of adventure/drama/comedy. Theater I went to see it was about 1/2 full for a 9am showing. Could have done without the 7 damn previews for movies that look like bantha fodder (Fifth Wave), way too many comic book movies (Another Xmen rehash, Batman v Superman (Sorry Ben Affleck, you are no Michael Keaton)), and only one preview that looked real promising (Zootopia).

After a second viewing, here are three of my spoiler-free thoughts:

1) I thought this movie was just plain good on first viewing. I liked it a lot more after the second viewing. For now, I'm chalking this up to anticipation. However, this movie not only stands up well to a second viewing, but if you've been avoiding all spoilers and speculation, like I have, it almost requires a second viewing to confirm your initial thoughts. In part, I think this is a strength of the movie, but in part I think it could also be a byproduct of the editing.
2) See this movie in Dolby Atmos if you can! There are some subtle but noticeable differences it makes. I'm seeing it again tonight in Atmos and later this week again without.
3) I saw it first in 2D and didn't think 3D would make much difference. For the most part, it didn't, but there are a few select shots that are just so damn good in 3D that it is worth it to me. FWIW, the 2D screening I saw was in Dolby Vision and the 3D used Christie 6P Laser. Both were beautiful. The Christie projector does a great job of brightness and contrast even with the 3D glasses, probably better even than IMAX Laser. I'm definitely going to investigate this by seeing Star Wars again in IMAX Laser.

Of course, I plan on investigating further.

You seem surprised? Harrison Ford was practically giddy when he was making the rounds on the promotional circuit. For a guy who was always known as a curmudgeon, who has gotten to the age where that adjective is amplified and squared...you had to know he got life changing money for this. And it was worth every penny.

I didn't read the article, but you have to assume there was some sort of insurance settlement for his on set injury as well. Not sure if that is included in that figure...if not, adjust accordingly.

Ford, who also received $1.5m in compensation from Disney after breaking his leg on set, is said to have picked up just $10,000 for his role as Solo in 1977’s Star Wars, which was the highest-grossing film of all time when it debuted in cinemas

Ford paid a kazillion dollars. Fisher paid 1.5 million. Wonder what Hammill was paid?

It turns out the layout for how much stars like Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill would get paid was put into motion last year.

In 2014, before Disney even began to make “The Force Awakens” offers to cast members, the studio made a decision to create a “legacy pay scale” intended for talent like Ford, Fisher and Hamill, who had previously been a part of the “Star Wars” universe, and general pay scale for actors that would be appearing for the first time.

It wasn't at Mann's and it wasn't on May 25th, but I remember the first time I laid eyes on Star Wars.

We were late to the Century City Theater because of parking problems.

The movie had already started when we walked in and the first thing I saw was Vader choking the rebel in the blockade runner. Hooked!
