The Star Wars thread

Start another thread like we did with TFA? I don't want to see anything good or bad until I have seen the movie.
 
How big of a spoiler could there be? I mean we all know they won't be defeating the Empire. It's like this ragtag team of Rebels are, um, a Suicide Squad. :grin:

No way I am daring to face the crowds this weekend to see this. I'll hafta wait. :(
 
Just got back from seeing this movie. It was good. Very good i would even hazard to say. Just the right blend of humor, darkness, and action.

***SPOILER ALERT*** The big planet killing space station is called the Death Star ***END SPOILER***
 
Also, based on his accent in the movie, did anyone else want Diego Luna/Cassian to say "Hello, My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father..."

It's playing in a lot of places, so shouldn't be hard to see! But it should really be seen with laser projection! Pew! Pew! Pew!

I saw it yesterday at the Chinese in IMAX Laser 3D (pew! pew!), and the theater was nowhere near full! That was at 5AM, though. :D
 
Rogue One was soooooooo great. Unlike any other Star Wars movie, great standalone move and fit into the SW universe seamlessly. It took a little bit for the movie to find its footing, but the last third of it was unreal.
 
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

I liked the movie a lot. It fills a major plot hole from the previous movies with regards to the Death Star's design and there are minor quibbles with regard to good luck in getting by security protocols both on the Rebel and Empire sides but that has been present in the previous movies to get the story moving forward.

It plays up the war aspect of the franchise in living up to the Star Wars name and is more of an ensemble showcase rather than focusing on a central protagonist like Rey. There is noticeably more gray areas explored in motivations of the characters whereas the original trilogy illustrated things in black and white.

This movie makes very good connections in filling in the gaps from the previous movies, but there is one little thing that bugs me. If I recall correctly, Princess Leia claimed that she was on a diplomatic mission in the opening of Episode IV, but that seems like an absurd claim given the end of this movie.

Plenty of cameos and Easter eggs for devoted followers of the movies and books. The performances were well-rounded and good. The CGI is impressive overall but there were noticeable flaws that took you out of the experience during brief moments when that technology was overextended in closeups. There are scenes from the trailers missing from the final product but that could be a matter of misdirection and/or the result of the reshoots. I love Michael Giacchino's work but I have to acknowledge that his score is a little bit of a letdown, but given the time constraints of bringing him in at the last moment, it's understandable and it's still not bad.

The movie is a slow build generating momentum towards a climactic ending that should satisfy fans. I counter complaints of the movie being too slow to open by saying that you need time to know enough about the characters in order to care about them so that there is weight for the payoff ending. I've even heard criticism citing that the movie was too scattered to start but I thought it played well to the hectic situation the characters found themselves in.

Alan Tudyk's K2SO stands out as the comic relief. There were some emotional moments performed well by both Felicity Jones and Mads Mikkelsen. Donnie Yen and Wen Jiang were BA MFers in action scenes. And Darth Vader's presence is certainly a crowd-pleaser.

Did you by chance notice a couple of familiar X-Wing Pilots from ANH show up during the big space battle scene? Apparently Edwards was at the Ranch and they came across an old tin with unused SW footage...scenes from the Death Star Battle. He took that footage and pretty much seamlessly put in folks that are now 40 years older (if even alive). What did everyone think of the two prominent CGI characters (faces). I thought one very well done while the other (at the end) was just ok. Someone mentioned Rebels...The Ghost, Chopper and even a reference to General Syndulla are all included.

As for the movie, have now seen it twice and thoroughly enjoyed it. Knew it would be dark but ended up a bit darker than I figured it would be. Like any SW movie, there are bit and pieces that are just meh but those were few and far between. A bit of a slow burner as they set up planets/characters but that 3rd act, wow.

X-Wing Red Leader and Y-Wing Gold Leader (sorry, I don't know the character names). I was hoping for Porkins, but if he was in there, I missed it.
