Time to put no. 8 in the rafters.

"BTW, no. Neither are being traded or bought out. I know they did it to Quick. But they're not doing that to 2 franchise legends."

One could argue that Quick is actually more legendary in LA than either Kopi or DD. He'll most likely be in the HOF, where the other two may not.

Their contributions will never be forgotten. But at this point they're hamstringing the team with their salaries for the next couple of years.
Of the big 4, the only one that may not have his jersey retired, or possibly getting into the HOF, is Jeff Carter. Pretty sure the Jersey will go up, HOF is less than 50/50.

Kopi will definitely be in the Hall of Fame.

Not sure if he’s in your big 4, but I don’t see Brown getting into the HOF. He was a good player, but not exceptional. He just had a great team around him.

OK, honest question: was Doughty this bad in the Four Nations Tournament? I remember him being rusty, I don't remember him being super slow. Maybe he's playing through a setback and will be closer to "normal" next season.

That said, we should look at the facts here:
1. We're paying Drew $11M a season. For that money, you need to change the outcome of games regularly. Be a McDavid or Makar or Ovechkin.
2. The record with or without Drew in the lineup was basically the same. Maybe worse for a while during the period where Hiller did the idiotic 11F-7D thing and when he was still playing Gavi on the right side and scratching Spence/Clarke to play Momo.
3. PP1 ended up being 5F, but even prior to that there was no noticable difference with 92 or 8 running PP1. Drew wasn't moving the needle offensively.

I know we're all (myself definitely included) emotional today and yesterday after the loss. And Drew doesn't suck. He's still a top 4 D easily in the league. But the Kings are playing him $11M to be a slightly better Cam Fowler. The team needs to find a way to get more out of him. For both him and Kopi that might be less minutes so that the can go harder during their ice time and make big contributions.

In addition to there loyalty, Doughty, Kopitar, Quick and Brown gave us the one thing us fans never thought we'd get, and they gave it to us twice. IMO, each of them have earned the right to retire as Kings, on their terms, no matter how their play evolves in the twilight of their careers.

I said it in the other thread & I'll say it here. Doughty was injured this season. And however much he's healed, he's not 100%. And he can't be until the off-season. So let him fully heal & train. Then we'll see how good he still is. Meanwhile he should at best play on the 2nd PP unit. He actually fits better with them than the 1st unit.

With Kopi, this is his last year before his contract is up. And I want to see if Byfield can replace him as 1st Center. I know he's got the tools but he doesn't yet have the consistency. And we have to think about who's replacing Kopi as the #1 or 2 Center because Danault is Center #3. BTW, no. Neither are being traded or bought out. I know they did it to Quick. But they're not doing that to 2 franchise legends.
I could see them buying our Dewey or seeing if he is willing to move his NMC to go to the right team. Kopi will play his last season here in a diminished role, retire, get his statue, move to Slovenia.

Doughty has never played up to the $11M contract. As for this season, I don't blame DD as much as I blame Hiller. DD was clearly hurt yet they kept rolling him out there for far too many minutes. Hiller can see how he plays. If he can reduce time played or bench Clarke and Spence, he should surely be smart enough and do what's best for the team by playing DD less minutes.

Kopi will go down as the greatest King of all time. I'd definitely put him above Quickie.

The problem is not letting them stay and play out their contracts, they for sure earned that and still have lots of things to offer this team and its younger players.

But the problem is that neither one of Kopitar or Doughty should play 20 or 28 minutes as they did tonight. And this isn’t their fault, the blame should be on Hiller and Blake for this!
100% though I'm sure there is a bit of Kopi and DD saying they want to play the minutes. But agree, many have been saying it for a couple of years...both needed to play less minutes.

I know this is an emotion thread, but this team is still damn good. You saw how good we played without Drew. Trade him. Get a new coach, GM, then make trades to tinker, get it done. So much of this is mental.

In the meantime, I hate this team.
People are throwing the baby out with the bath water. This team matched their highest point total ever, had a tremendous season. Yet fans are saying we suck. We don't, we just had a coach that horribly mis-managed the team, made a terrible challenge that cost us a game and then QB couldn't clear a puck which led to a game tying goal and eventual game winner. 2 games, 2 wins that we should have had and nobody would be talking about the coach. But here we are.

I’m sure they will never go up to the coach and ask him to play them less. Of course not, they would never have had the careers they had if they didn’t want to play as much as they possibly could all the time.

That’s why we need a good coach, it’s his job to do what’s best for the team. In this case make the decision to let them play less minutes, something Hiller obviously didn’t have the balls to do.

So will Doughty.

Well, Kopi and Doughty will both be in the Kings HOF. But Hockey HOF? Fat chance for that because Toronto only recognizes players that had exceptionally great NHL careers to be worthy enough to earn a place there and rarely do players from West Coast or Western Conference teams get on that list. Because of course [L]EC bias.

Robitaille, Vachon, Dionne, Blake all say hi. Kopitar, Doughty, and Quick will all make the HOF. I'd bet the farm on it. East coast bias is a thing but 1) it's mostly about single season awards where the writers who vote were more likely to see an east coast player play every day and 2) it's probably even less of a thing in this day and age since highlights and even entire games are almost instantly available to watch across all of social media for eternity so the time difference thing doesn't really matter anymore.
