What a difference a day makes.

Rather than harping on mistakes players may have made in a loss, some coaches tend to focus on the positives and encourage some clean up in any areas of missed opportunity. If that’s the approach Reign coach Andrew Lord took coming off the Kings disappointing come-from-ahead loss on Saturday to San Jose, it worked. And Sunday’s 4-1 victory by the Kings was a tailor-made win over their crosstown rivals.

After both LA and Anaheim dropped their opening contests to San Jose in this year’s Rookie Faceoff event, earning a win on Sunday came with a little extra incentive. Much like the day prior, Kings prospect Koehn Ziemmer opened the scoring and helped kick start LA’s offensive push early.

As noted in previous articles, the Kings also brought a prospect heavy lineup to Irvine for this weekend’s games. From our pregame lineup article:

Greentree – Connors – Ziemmer
Jamsen – Lawrence – Wright
Chovan – Hughes – Isogai
O’Hara – Lombardi – Mastrodonato

Corbet – Dvorak
Kirsanov – Brzustewicz
Woolley – Salin

George

Kenny Connors, who turned pro after leaving UMass and will join the Reign this season on his new entry level contract, had perhaps the unconventional hat trick in recent memory. His first goal, on the power play, was a rather normal affair. He then followed that up by receiving credit on a play that resulted in Anaheim’s netminder putting the puck in his own net. Later, Connors capped things off with an empty net goal.

Carter George manned the Kings crease and began his afternoon by stopping all 11 shots faced in the opening frame. The young goalie ran it up to 27-for-27 after 40 minutes and ended his night with 37 saves, only allowing one power play goal to the host Ducks.
