Will there be a magic number thread this season?

Well, let's see. The Nashville and Dallas are a point ahead of the Kings with each having TWO games in hand. With the Golden Showers winning tonight that puts them a point behind the Kings with ONE game in hand. Fortunately the Kings schedule seems rather easy and Vegas' schedule seems harder than the Kings so there's that. Unfortunately, they play Dallas once so if that ends in OT the Pity Point doesn't help the Kings. However, Nashville and Dallas do not play each other so that's a good thing (for similar reasons). Should be a fun ending to the season....

Nashville has the toughest schedule of the contenders from what I remember reading.

ah, last i had seen he was still out. Either way, i don't believe Stone will be back since they dont have the cap space for him.

Stone is back as well. Believe they put 4 players on IR to cover him coming back.

I heard through a source at Taco Bell that the 4 players were legit injuries. Three were diagnosed with diarrhea (from Taco Bell appearently) and one had a hang nail.

We have to remember no game on the schedule is easy for the Kings. Beating Seattle will be a large task. Yes on paper the Kings have the easier schedule, however most of the teams vying for a playoff berth have been better than the Kings the last couple of weeks.

You know who we could have really used this year? And I was 100% on board for trading him - Carter. Considering the lack of return, that?s one dump we could?ve done without.

Except we'd probably have him instead of Danault. Or we wouldn't be playing Byfield with 3rd line minutes. And/or Lizotte would not be a glue guy as the 4th line center.

I think we could have used a top pairing or even top-4 defenseman the most. Carter would have been nice to have but we had bigger problems. And I'm happy how things worked out for Carts-- bounced back statistically and getting extended by the Pens.

This is likely very accurate

Yeah you may be right re: Danault especially. Like I said, I was fine with the trade and most were, just came to mind when it was clear the need for a top six forward who can score.

And Jeff Carter fit that role perfectly, in 2012. As for now, the need still exists, but Carter certainly can't fill it now.
Back to the topic of this thread, i.e. magic number, if the Kings don't win these next few games, the only magic number will be the countdown to their missing the playoffs.

Devils beat Golden knights 3-2 tonight
Canucks leading the Stars at the end of the 2nd 4-2
Edit: Now 5-2 Van

Kings up by three points on Vegas. Each with 5 games left. The Kings don't need any more help (but the Knights sure do). If the Kings miss the playoffs now, they'll have no one to blame but themselves. MUST beat the Ducks tomorrow.

The way the Canucks are playing…. They may be a bigger threat especially closing out the season against them.

VGK remaining games
WSH, SJS, @DAL, @CHI, @STL

KINGS remaining games
@ ANA, CHI, ANA, @ SEA, @ VAN

The Kings' goal differential is -4. The next worst team which is currently in the top 3 in their division is Edmonton, at +29. Calgary is at +83. Florida is tops in the league at +99. Vegas is +17.

Yet, somehow, if the Kings manage 3-2 in their next five, Vegas would have to go 5-0 to pass the Kings.

Yep. I think the Kings just need to handle their own business in the winnable games but Vancouver could be 2 points behind us when they finish up their games in hand tonight and then tomorrow. I still think Vegas is our biggest threat but Vancouver has the potential to have a 7-game win streak after tomorrow.

Nashville is actually a team that could free fall and help out the Pacific. They have to play 5 teams with more wins than them and then Arizona.

This is going to be an interesting week and a half.
