All Things: Directors

Why is everyone being so reserved. Scorsese's comments were pure snobbery and unnecessary. How dare he judge someone else's ART. Not a fan...ok, mind yer business. Just sounds like a grouchy old man.
Lots of people dare to judge other people's ART. For a living. They're called critics. It he was Roger Ebert and said the Marvel movies were a piece of $*%& it would be fine, but because he's not, it's not? Is the problem that he dared to have an opinion or that he dared to express it?

Suggestion: avoid reading Francis Ford Coppola’s comments from today :)

All those f***in' organized crime movies are all the same. Hell, they practically all have the same cast, all playing the same character from movie to movie.

F***. Joe Pesci made a career of playing himself!

What exactly are those movies adding to society that Marvel movies aren't?

Which isn't to say Casino, Good Fellas, The Godfathers, etc, aren't good or worthwhile. But, c'mon, man. Scarface by Brian de Palma says more about society than Winter Soldier?

Say what you will about the Marvel movies, at least those characters all have different flaws and their own approaches to their problems. And then they mixed 'em up in the crossover movies to establish relationships, culminating in a free for all cinematic first.

Who was that director who shot the same movie with Ethan Hawke for like, 10 years? Did he cross over characters from other of his movies? Did he do it merging all of those movies storylines?

The point is not whether his movies are good or not. The point is he's entitled to his opinion.

yes. He is. But, why the hell does he need to express it? It just seems like he is seeking out an audience. Looking at the big kid in the room and trying to make it his bitch. And why? Oh yeah, he has a movie coming out. It smacks of old elitist horse****...I'm sure Academy voters will be impressed.

Christ santiclaws...you know when Darby and I agree, well...i'm not sure we ever have. So...we are in uncharted territory here.

Of course he is. But it's a dumb opinion, devoid of self awareness.

What if I told you they were the opposite side of the same coin? [or is that what you meant by being self aware?] One glorifying the “Anti” hero to ridiculous proportions while simultaneously living a double life to fit into society and the other one glorifying the “Super” hero fighting the good fight also simultaneously living a double life to fit into society.

This may be the Westworld equivalent to choosing which hat you wear before entry; Darby is a white hat guy whereas Santiclaws is a black hat guy. No judgement.

Marvel, like Star Wars, has suffered from the Disneyfication of its product. I get it. People find them to be fun. But I think the mass produced nature of these movies is part of what turns the more “artsy” guys off.

I accept that

*laughing* I'm just kidding around with all of you, unless you're a buzzfeed quiz results I'm pretty sure people are more complex than the movies they like to watch. But, yeah, I kind of nailed it.

It's the McDonald's of movies.

And I get it too. I don’t particularly care for Marvel either but I have my own set of popcorn flicks I enjoy watching. Partial to Stallone/Schwarzenegger type guilty pleasures. But I recognize that they’re silly. There are people out there who think Marvel is creating really deep stuff.

I hate to be the non cynic here...but, are they really mass produced?
I will give credit to Marvel, with the exception of Captain Marvel, they almost over develop their product. Feige is no rubber stamper. There is a lot of CRAFT in their work. Are they Criterion/prestige/academy of film stuffs, no.
But to pull that elitist cacamierda just makes you sound old and snobby. CINEMA...is supposed to entertain, first and foremost. Same crap writers used to say about comic books. 'It's not literature'.

They’re episodic movies that come out seemingly every few months, where you have to watch all of them in order to know what’s going on in the latest release. It’s definitely, at least partially, a money grab. These are the types of movies that have 100 executives giving their input. I think that’s what makes guys like Scorsese and Coppola cringe. They’re besties with Spielberg and Lucas who are known for popcorn flicks. I don’t think the escapist aspect alone is what bothers them. Though, it’s only a guess.

That's dismissive...which is kinda the point. What about the de-aging process that Scorcese is using? Can you not link that progress directly to Marvel movies and the so called 'chain' franchises? Also...cliffhangers were the early form of what you're complaining about. Are those invalidated because some old grump has to take the air out of something for no apparent reason? At this point, the argument isn't about whether they are right, as much as it's about WHY they feel they have to make such a big stink. I'm tired of people giving their opinions when nobody asked for it. Just mind yer business.

A big part of it is the reaction statement nowadays, which this whole drama is an example of. It's a straw tower built on a nothing question designed to illicit potential bait.

Someone asks a prominent person to comment on something they're not associated with. Their answer becomes the headline - "John Smith Slams Widget Franchise!"

They can then take that reaction and ask others what they think of it, and now that answer becomes another headline - "Jane Doe Rips John Smith's Reaction!"

That's not even counting the story on the internet reactions to both responses - "Widget Twitter Goes Crazy Over John Smith's Comments!"

That's days of easy stories based on a question at the end of the interview - "Mr. Smith, do you take your kids to see Widget movies? What do you think of them?"

Like Widget the World Watcher?

Haha.

I’m not complaining. Just understanding why those guys in particular would hate these types of movies. Just listen to Scorsese talk about the movies he grew up with for five minutes and it’s clear. It’s just one opinion. Like I said, I have my own “fun” movies I like to watch.
