PLD and how I learned to quit worrying about the bomb

I guess because he asked for a trade? They hated him, he asked for a trade, then they hated him more.
They hated that he asked for a trade. I did not hear, or read anywhere that there was much dislike for him, let alone "hatred" before that. The fan base was pissed that he wanted out. They were scared they were going to get screwed in the trade. The hatred came after the request for the trade.

I've not seen the documentary.

Though why would he ask for a trade if there wasn't animosity already? I saw video of him skating in circles on a shift at some point during I guess that point in time. What makes me wonder is why Blake would go after a guy like that but that's uhh, been discussed.

No documentary, you just needed to research the trade when it happened. You could have read the Jets user forums and watched the local sports media during that time. Even though he slumped the last half of last year (like most of the team), most of the fans and media in Winnipeg felt he was their best player last year. They were not happy that he asked for a trade. They were not happy with Wheeler's play and attitude last year. That was the player that they showed hatred for.

The video of him skating around in circles was when he was in Columbus. That got played a lot during the trade process.

3 players on that team asked for a trade at the end of last year. Wheeler who seemed to have been a problem was moved out. Who knows what was going on. 2 of the other players that asked for a trade ended up signing after PLD left. Who knows why that was. Does not mean it had anything to do with the fans view of PLD. Many fans disliked Connor and Scheifele for their defensive effort as much as they showed any dislike of PLD. This was especially true of Connor.

The French Canadians in the front office were the ones (I assume) that were behind the trade. Bergevin always wanted him in Montreal. PLD wanted out of Winnipeg and he wanted to come to LA. That is pretty clear based on what happened and what PLD said in interviews that he gave after the trade and before the preseason. He had no desire to go to Montreal like it was reported. He wanted to be a 26 year old millionaire living by the beach in the south bay. The Kings really got robbed as I do not think PLD was wanting to sign anywhere else, but LA (as far as the teams that had interest in him).

I researched PLD a bit when the trade occurred though I'll admit I dont have a PHD in PLD, and I said here why in the hell are we trading for this guy and most everyone said how great of a trade it was that we have a legit beast mode oiler killing playoff machine badass mofo 2C for EIGHT YEARS and how wrong I am. That's about all I remember from my research :D

For the record, he never asked for a trade. He just told the Jets he was not planning to re-sign with them. That necessitated a trade, or they'd lose him for nothing, but he never asked and he would have put them in a much worse position of he didn't let them know, a la Gudreau.

78 games into the season- What exactly does PLD bring to the table? Doesnt play PK, doesnt play PP, not known as faceoff guy or defensive specialists, not overly physical. What specifically is that he brings to the team? To me he looks like a very average NHL Player. You can see the skill in Kopi/Kempe/Fiala and others have. They pass the "eye test" as they say. Byfield slumping but earlier in the season he made some amazing passes and plays that got your attention and saw the combo of skill and size. PLD 156th overall in scoring for forwards and really showed there is nothing he excels at. Not bashing him per se....I literally dont see any type of skill set that makes him stand out at all. Anyone see something I don’t?

Are you kidding? His skill set is of a very, very good No. 1 NHL center. Kind of a mix between Kopi and Byfield, really. Big, fast, strong, terrific vision, good passer, good shot, soft hands. Can't take the puck from him if he is playing with motivation. When he wants to, he can dominate games. He could be point per game guy. He doesn't want to enough is the problem. That's what makes him so frustrating. Blessed with a ton of physical gifts but not enough desire.

No I’m not kidding…. When has he shown any of those things? The fact I’m legitimately asking isn’t a trick question. Quite frankly- Danault looks like a far better player. No one questions if danault is a legit nhl 2nd/3rd line center. No one asks because he clearly is.

I’ve heard comments like these about PLD about how scary talented he is…. But has anyone ever seen it? Has he shown it? You could have replaced his name with Nick Dowd on the jersey and no one would have known. If a player doesn’t use the skills he has…. Does he have them?

Vilardi has great hands…we saw it. We didn’t need to take anyone’s word for it. Why do the reports on PLDs awesome skill set boil down to “trust me bro.”

I remember Dennis Bernstein saying on satellite radio that he was someone Blake had been targeting for a long time even before the acquisition occurred. He wasn't really on my radar until he became a King, but I am thoroughly confused and unimpressed. I don't remember exactly but I seem to remember his lackadaisical skating and passing leading to the go ahead goal for the Ducks last night.

There's been moment's of skill flashed, but no idea how he's justifying that signing.

But, I'm forever a Richard's play with his whole heart guy <- (see avatar)

If PLD had 1/4 of Richards compete level I’d be satisfied.

On paper maybe. Have you seen him play? The whole trade looked "good on paper" (to some people), and here we are. Dude is a floundering 3C at best. It's not the player I dislike, because I don't think he has some secret playoff switch and I genuinely think this is his game and I'd hope he's trying his best to compete (we'll see? and even if he does one can F off if he doesn't "try" all year). It's Blake and the contract that are the problem. They should have known exactly what they were getting throwing that kind o money around. I mean maybe I'm wrong and he's just a lazy amazing player - but what does that amount to? Being bad. I think he's just an overpaid average player that will never fill the role he was signed for.

From what I have seen so far this season, he looks like a high quality second line forward who is: good at protecting the puck, has a knack for being in the right place, has strong net front presence, is able to make passes in tight spaces (usually in front of the net) and is probably the best on the team when it comes to deflections. On the flip side: his defense is lacking (especially at center), he doesn't always show a desire to compete, and he seems below average at faceoffs. Additionally his lack of PP time is hurting his production significantly.

All that said, imo he's playing the wrong position. Put him at wing where he can sit low in the offensive zone (ideally in front of the net) and utilizing his deflection skills and big body to screen the goalie. Keeping him at center is silly as it plays to his weaknesses rather than strengths (first forward back on D, typically high in the offensive zone, weak at faceoffs). It's no secret that PLD found his success at LW with Winnipeg. Not sure why the Kings Org is having such a tough time figuring this out.

This really is a utilization issue along with a motivation issue.

My main concern going into this was the contract and whether or not it would handcuff the Kings long-term. Still my primary concern.

This would have been true even if he were a 25 goal 25 assist player…the fact he’s being out scored by Dubois and -11 even more so.

Has P Luc D been the 1st star at least one game this season, even going back to Australia? Regardless, he’s been paid more than any other forward on the team. Never great when the guys driving Ferrari’s are playing like a Hyundai.

Yes he has been the 1st star of a game more than once this season. Also he won't be our highest paid forward until next season but there is no doubt that he is currently overpaid for what he is producing.

What can I say if you don't see it? The same thing was said about Byfield a lot. The big difference with Byfield was that at 20 he had time to grow his game, and he has, and I expect he will keep growing it.

With PLD the skill is there, it's just not there consistently, shift after shift. I've seen him make amazing plays very few players could make. A ton of talent and skill. Mostly wasted, unfortunately.
