2026 World Cup Thread

I was in vegas for that headbutt and remember the chaos that overtook the caesar's casino.

I don't know if you take the team who finished right behind Iran, or have a playoff for their spot. Knowing Fifa they'll see $$ and have some kind of mini tournament where they can sell tickets to multiple games. I wonder how the players feel. Do they want to play, are they pro regime and actively stand against it, is it just incredibly awkward? I saw the iranian women's team wouldn't sing their own national anthem the other day. What a crazy situation.

I wonder too if they could just move Iran's games to Canada and switch with other games, but I guess that's pretty hard when tickets have already gone on sale. I have no idea if any iranian fans already bought tickets to the games in LA. If they're replaced do they refund tickets and/or option other games?
Yea, I dunno.

Like the women, the men may dislike/hate the current regime, but to play in the country that is currently bombing the hell out of your country (collateral damage, et al) is very uncomfortable....to say the least.

Agreed it's very doubtful that FIFA will move the matches out of US&A.
When in doubt look for a money grab....and that is the path FIFA will take.

In re: Zidane.
2006 was the first time I watched matches for the world cup and there was such a huge build up to this french guy's last game (sorry match, lol), the love, respect, suicidal tendencies among all fans. So I watched it. The revered Captain lost his cool in extra time, head butted someone over trash talk (yo mama?), got ejected and then his team lost with penalties?! Whoa. It lived up to the hype and made a fan for life.

Iran- oof. The entire situation is complex and makes me feel like Joaquin Phoenix's character at the end of "Eddington"*. The practical matters in moving/changing the venue (meaning country) seems logical and the path of least resistance(1 for 1)and honor everyone's tickets. But Fifa's gonna fif. Swapping in Brazil to play New Zealand is just my crazy brain being cray.

* I may post on the media board about the weekend I watched both "Eddington" and " One Battle After Another" on HBO for the Oscar season. Spoiler: It was a mistake. They are both equally draining/haunting/recommended. Which was why I did not see them in the theater but...again, crazy brain being cray. Let me see if my fingers feel like typing it. =)

Agreed. I don't see how Iran could play games in the US, unless they go old Russia and say we're going to make a point and win. At least they don't have a head to head matchup with the US in the group stage.

How long can Fifa say it's "monitoring the situation" before acting? Hell there are US cities who don't have the money they need to guarantee security yet (see Boston).

....Can you imagine what security is going to be like now for World Cup matches in the wake of the whole Iran mess.

This World Cup is looking more and more like a black cloud than an international celebration.
