New Animated Horror Comedy to Take Us to Hell & Back

Weird things can happen purely by accident. You know what we're talking about... pick up a book, read aloud, and boom! plague of locusts. Yeah, that can suck, but you know what sucks more? Accidentally getting dragged to hell.

According to Variety, Rob Riggle, Brian Posehn, and Kumail Nanjiani have joined the cast of the stop-motion animation production Hell & Back starring T.J. Miller and Nick Swardson.

Tom Gianas and Ross Shuman will helm.

The story revolves around two best friends who must rescue their buddy when he's accidentally dragged to hell. Riggle will play a 20-year-old who's starting to grow up, much to the chagrin of his friends Augie and Remy. Posehn will portray an aging heavy-metal fan stuck in the '80s, and Nanjiani will play Sal the Demon, an employee of hell.

Aardman Animations Change Scene in The Pirates Following Complaints From Leper Societies

A few days ago we reported that Lepra, the World Health Organisation and The Society For Leprosy Affected People cried out in protest against a scene in the trailer for Aardman’s next offering, The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists. The trailer contains a scene where the Pirate Captain, played by Hugh Grant, swings onto a boat and demands its passengers give up all their gold, only to be told cheerily, “Afraid we don’t have any gold, old man. This is a leper boat!” by a man whose arm then falls off.

It was a joke that fell flat with the above organisations, as well as with one woman who had previously suffered from leprosy and who rather bizarrely wrote a letter to Michelle Obama, of all people, demanding that the White House boycott the film. Aardman responded to the complaints quickly, saying that, “Aardman take matters like this most seriously and is reviewing the situation.”

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Aardman have decided to change the scene in order to placate Lepra and the others who have complained. It has not yet been said whether the scene will simply be altered or whether it will be removed from the film altogether.


After reviewing the matter, we decided to change the scene out of respect and sensitivity for those who suffer from leprosy. The last thing anyone intended was to offend anyone and it is clear to us that the right way to proceed is to honor the efforts made by organizations like ILEP to educate the public about this disease.

Who knew lepers still existed????

There are a couple of ways to look at this. First of all, it should be noted that Aardman are a bunch of princes for not only acknowledging but also acting upon concerns voiced by a very small minority. Around 95% of people in the world are naturally immune to leprosy, and according to a report by the World Health Organisation the number of people still suffering from the disease dropped by 15% between 2010 and 2011, with most countries that have previously been highly endemic now close to eliminating the disease altogether. There are only a very small number of cases in Europe and, as far as I’ve been able to gather, no cases at all in the UK. However, Aardman believe that even if only a small number of individuals will be offended by the joke, it is still too many people.

Eric Powell and David Fincher Say ‘The Goon’ Adaptation is Not Dead, Paul Giamatti Apologizes for Sparking Rumors | /Film

Fincher, for his part, sent Powell a quick note saying that “The things that make the Goon so completely unique are, unfortunately, more than mere concerns to corporate hollywood… But I am undeterred–this atom can be split.”

So take heart, Goon fans: it appears the comic could be headed to the big screen yet. Though I still can’t say I’m all that optimistic about seeing it happen sooner rather than later…

David Fincher and Blur still have the option for the Goon film and are still actively looking for funding… It’s been a while since anyone spoke to Giamatti about the project and I guess he wasn’t kept in the loop as to what was going on. So zip up your fly, Internet. The Goon is in the exact same position it’s been in for the past couple of years. Prepping the design and script while searching for funding.



I don’t have a role in acquiring the funding for the film, but I speak to Tim Miller at Blur, Fincher, and Mike Richardson with Dark Horse Entertainment every few weeks to get an update on the status. And last I spoke with Fincher and Miller they were gearing up for another round of meetings to try to acquire funding. We have to find the right people that get what we’re trying to do and will give us the budget we require. It’s going to take time when you’re dealing with a project like the Goon film. An animated (and not aimed towards toddlers) gangster film with monsters, murder, and tons of dark humor… where have you seen that before?

LINE-UP, AND THIS YEAR’S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, SEAN LENNON



Festival Will Screen West Coast Premiere of “A Monster in Paris” as well as Revivals of “Team America: World Police,” “The Iron Giant,” “Fantastic Planet,” “Akira,” and First Animation Oscar Winner “Shrek” The 3rd Annual Event will Honor Celebrated Animator and Academy Award Nominee, Bill Plympton, For His Contribution To The World Of Animation



LOS ANGELES, CA, FEBRUARY 7, 2012 – The beloved Los Angeles Animation Festival (LAAF) returns for its 3rd annual event with new screenings of animated feature films & shorts from around the world, exclusive panels, and parties celebrating the animation community. The Festival will run from Wednesday, March 7th through Sunday, March 11th at the historic Regent Showcase in Hollywood. LAAF announced they have enlisted longtime LAAF supporter, Sean Lennon, as Artistic Director and will honor Bill Plympton at this year’s festival.

This year’s Artistic Director, Sean Lennon, has been a supporter of LAAF from its inception. Lennon is an admirer and connoisseur of great animation, even working as an animator on his music video Would I Be The One, inspired by Fantastic Planet which was screened at the first LAAF for Lennon, as it’s a film that resonates through much of his art and music. This year, LAAF will screen the film again, with an entirely live score featuring six musicians and five actors on stage. Lennon has also hand selected several films this year which have not been screened in quite some time. Lennon will personally introduce these unique films which have impacted him and his career.

Events honoring Bill Plympton will include the West Coast premiere of Adventures in Plymptoons, a documentary on Plympton’s career by Alexia Anastasio, and a special screening of Plympton’s first animated feature film, The Tune, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Additional events include a cast and crew screening of The Iron Giant; a revival of Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s Team America: World Police; a screening of Shrek honoring its 10th Anniversary and it’s win of the first Oscar? for Animated Feature; a behind the scenes look at the making of web sensation Dick Figures which currently has 85 million views and counting; and MTV’s Liquid Television-sponsored event featuring classic and new material from this iconic brand.

“Beyond celebrating the world of animation, LAAF provides up and coming animators the opportunity to connect with industry professionals and showcase their work,” said John Andrews, LAAF Founder & Co-Director. “This year we’re excited to honor one of the greats of animation, Bill Plympton, whose work and independent career have inspired so many of us in the field of animation.”

FESTIVAL COMPETITION

MTV’s Liquid Television is sponsoring a competition offering a $5,000 development deal. This year’s complete contest categories include Best Short (20 minutes or less), Best Feature, Best TV episode (11-30 minutes), Best Animated Music Video and the special category, Best “Animation on the Edge”. This category is sponsored by MTV’s Liquid Television and looks to recognize an animator’s work that is on the cutting edge of humor, story-telling or technique aimed at a teen or adult audience.
