All Things:Character Actors

St. Vincent Images Featuring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy

Trailer for this looks like it's fairly stock...but Murray kinda raises anything he's in at this point.

TIFF Review: 'St. Vincent' Starring Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy, Naomi Watts & Chris O'Dowd | ThePlaylist

"St. Vincent" goes for feeling, not necessarily truth. These are characters who are on a journey, in a movie world where another wacky adventure is just around the corner, and dramatic twists not too far behind, and neither are anything that can't be cured with a quick quip or earnest good will. When those types of movies are as well executed as this one is, it's easy stop niggling about the dropped plot threads, clearly reduced supporting roles (sorry Scott Adsit as Oliver's Dad; Chris O'Dowd, we wish there was even more of you as Oliver's teacher) and the simple familiarity of the movie. Sometimes, a story well told is good enough, and this is a yarn that will make you genuinely laugh in the right places, even if the punchlines and plot turns are seen coming from a mile way.

Damn, Scott Adsit's in this, too?

I was watching some episodes of the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon this weekend and was very surprised to find out that Clancy Brown is doing the voice of TaskMaster on the show.

That show, which is pretty entertaining for an all ages Spider-Man cartoon, actually has a lot of cool guest voices.

Chi McBride - Nick Fury
JK Simmons - J. Jonah Jameson
Steven Weber - Norman Osborn
Diedrich Bader - Kraven
Terry Crews - Blade
Billy West - Rocket Raccoon
Mark Hamill - Nightmare

It's a good little show.

OOOOh that's a murderers row. J Jonah should NEVER be anyone BUT J.K. Simmons.

Wait...just reread. Taskmaster you say...Clancy Brown you say??????

5, but I found it funny that when you are familiar with the work of one of these actors, Keith David or Catherine O'Hara, just as examples that stood out for me, you may find it odd to see them in a list of character actors.

Agreed about O'Hara, I found that one kinda surprising. I guess she is a character actor by default now, but she used to be a top billing type...Beetlejuice/Home Alone etc. Not your typical actress so I guess her quirkiness qualifies her. I would guess Parker Posey is sort of an equivalent.
Keith David is a guy that seems to have gone the opposite direction. Started out in bit parts, but just so commanding that the parts have gotten bigger and bigger. If you haven't seen Dead Presidents...DO. He is epic. I don't see him as a character actor as much as a straight actor at this point. All in perspective I guess.
For the longest time I would see his name in credits and wasn't sure if it was him or David Keith(Major League 2/Firestarter amongst other things) who belongs on any good character actor list. Doesn't seem to work too much anymore sadly.

Edward Norton Revisits the Decision to Not Play The Hulk in The Avengers

While talking to NPR’s Terry Gross on Fresh Air (via EW) for Birdman, Norton said the following regarding The Hulk:
“My feeling was that I experimented and experienced what I wanted to. I really, really enjoyed it. And yet, I looked at the balance of time in life that one spends not only making those sorts of films but then especially putting them out, and the obligations that rightly come with that. There were just a lot of things—I wanted more diversity. I sort of chose to continue on my path of having a diversity of experiences. Maybe on some unconscious level, I didn’t want to have an association with one thing in any way degrade my effectiveness as an actor, in characters. I think you can sort of do anything once, but if you do it too many times, it can become a suit that’s hard to take off, in other peoples’ eyes. And if I had continued on with it, I wouldn’t have made Moonrise Kingdom, or Grand Budapest, or Birdman, because those all overlapped with [Avengers]. And those were more the priority for me, but I continue to be a fan and I’m really, really happy I got to do it once.”

For a guy known to be a PRICKlypear...not a bit of snark there. Hell of an actor.
