Weekend Box Office – PUSS IN BOOTS Snatches First Place from TOWER HEIST with $33 Million

Unlike Tower Heist, A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas did have 3D prices to boost its numbers – which is what makes the three-quel’s debut estimate of $13.1 million from 2,875 locations look even sadder. The film’s three-day gross is running 13% behind the last Harold and Kumar feature from 2008 – a 2D feature, just to be clear. The comedy franchise has always had reasonable budgets, however, so with TV rights and the home market, Harold and Kumar 3D should have no trouble making back its reported $19 million production costs.

This is a real shame. Saw it yesterday and LOVED it. Laughed out loud and the bromance between 'roldy and KOO-mar has never been better. Great use of 3d with a lot of shots taken at the whole 3d phenomenon. Patton Oswalt makes another unecessary hit-n-run appearance as himself, er I mean a mall Santa/drug dealer, Danny Trejo was actually a lot of fun, aw man, I just love these movies. It'll eventually be a hit when it gets a home release, like the other 2 were, but this movie has soooooo many jokes predicated on the use of 3d that, if you like these movies, you are doing yourself a disservice not seeing this in a theater. It put me in a Christmas spirit long enough to be taken out of it by the Xmas tree and big crowds already at the Grove, go see it...you can thank me later.

Hayden Schlossberg and Jon Hurwitz HAROLD & KUMAR Animated Series Interview

The latest installment in the Harold & Kumar franchise, A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas just opened in theaters to an enthusiastically warm reception from audiences and critics alike. Just as the film was about to open, news broke of a possible animated series iteration of the characters. If you’re familiar with the franchise, it’s not hard to imagine a pretty great animated iteration of the White Castle-loving friends. Steve recently got the chance to sit down with Hayden Schlossberg and Jon Hurwitz, the writers of all three films in the Harold & Kumar series.

The two are behind the animated series version of everyone’s favorite multi-cultural duo, and talked pretty extensively about their plans for the series. They speak about what led them to the idea of an animated series, if the series would impact the feature film franchise, reveal that they’ve met with Comedy Central regarding the show, and talk about the involvement of Neil Patrick Harris in the half-hour animated series (John Cho and Kal Penn are already attached to voice their characters). Hit the jump for the full interview.

Hurwitz talked about how they came up with the idea of a Harold & Kumar TV show in the first place:

“What we feel is what works about these movies is the two central characters. It’s this sort of multi-cultural odd couple that everyone’s grown to know and love, and you just take these two guys and you put them in any kind of movie and we feel like we could bring them on a ridiculous and surreal adventure…Just the fact that you could take these characters and put them in these different types of movies led us to think, ‘You know what, maybe we could do an animated TV show as well which gives us the freedom to take these guys, and go anywhere with them’.”

Schlossberg says that when the idea to create a television iteration of the characters arose, they settled on making it animated because the surreal situations that Harold and Kumar are always found in would be too expensive for live-action:

“When we first started thinking about Harold & Kumar on television, we realized it had to be animated because if we did it live-action it would just cost too much per episode with all the surreal crazy things we usually have them do.”

Hurwitz added that another advantage of a Harold & Kumar TV show is that it allows them to take on more current issues (not unlike South Park) because of the short lag time between production and the actual airing of the episode:

“We love working on the Harold & Kumar movies, but let’s face it, it takes a long time for them to get out. A lot of times we’ll have thoughts and different ideas for something Harold and Kumar can do, but it just takes too long to get the movie made. One of the things that’s fun about animation or television in general is we could get it out a little bit faster, so we can be that much more current in terms of what’s going on in the world.”

The series isn’t yet locked into a network, as the duo said that they’re currently in the process of pitching the series, but they did reveal that they’ve met with the home of a number of irreverent half-hour shows, Comedy Central:

“We’ve had a meeting with Comedy Central so far, [but] we have not had a meeting with HBO yet.”

Comedy Central and HBO seem like the best fits for the series, especially since Schlossberg and Hurwitz want to make the best version of the show possible without sacrificing their creative freedom in deference to network censors:

“For us really we’re just looking for the place that is gonna allow us to do the best version of the show, a place where we do have the freedom to give that Harold and Kumar sensibility on the air, so there are a lot of places where it could really work out, we’re just not sure where it’s gonna end up.”

And if you were worried about the characters being replaced by different voice actors, Hurwitz assured us that John Cho and Kal Penn are both attached to voice Harold and Kumar. Furthermore, they hope to bring Neil Patrick Harris into the mix, though not in weekly capacity:

“John and Kal are attached. Those guys are fully attached to do the voices of Harold and Kumar. Neil’s very aware of it. His involvement in the show wouldn’t be an every episode kind of thing. Kind of how Neil shows up for a taste in each movie, he would show up for a sort of taste in each season I feel like.”

Finally, when asked whether doing the series would diminish the chances of them making another feature film Harold & Kumar adventure, Schlossberg said they’re hope is to continue doing both:

“Our goal here is not to end the Harold & Kumar movies, it’s just something that seemed like fun for us, to keep it going. It’s a lot of time in between Harold & Kumar [movies] and I think fans would like to just see those characters on different adventures, and that type of comedy works well in 30 minutes. Our hope is that we can continue doing that and continue doing movies.”

OH HELL YEAH.

GOON Trailer

The first trailer for the hockey comedy Goon has gone online. The movie centers on a sweet, simple-minded guy (Seann William Scott) with the talent for being the ever-loving p*ss out of people, which makes him ideally suited for the occupation of hockey thug. I caught the flick at TIFF and thought it was painfully funny, and I’m glad that it’s coming to a wider audience. The trailer does a good job covering the plot, showcasing Scott’s terrific performance, and it doesn’t give away too many of the great jokes.

Eddie Murphy Quitting Family Movies; Turning BEVERLY HILLS COP into TV Series; May Return to Stand-Up

I really think Eddie no longer has the ability to be funny. And Kingsqueen is right, he looks more like Charlie than Charlie does.

Just in case anyone missed it...Brett Ratner suffered a severe case of foot in mouth by a)going on Howard Stern and talking about how he has girls tested for disease before 'doing' them and b) saying somewhere else that 'rehearsal was for fags'...the end result, public apologies and a withdrawl from producing the Academy Awards. Well, of course...he is taking his ball and going home, Eddie Murphy has now pulled out of hosting duties. So the Oscars just got reallllllllllllllllly boring again. Hooray.

Pretty ****ing stupid of Ratner...

but, yeah, any chance of the Oscars being not boring just got downgraded pretty heavily.

Brian Grazer, Brett Ratner’s Tower Heist Producer, Takes Over As Producer Of Oscars Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

In short, the Academy have announced that Brian Grazer will step in as producer of The Oscars for next year, replacing Brett Ratner.

Here’s Grazer’s statement:

It’s very gratifying to be part of a show that honors excellence in the medium to which I have devoted so much of my career. [Co-producer] Don [Misher] is a legend, and I am excited to work with him.

A show that honors excellence? The Oscars? Hmmm.

Could This Year’s Oscars Be Hosted By The Muppets? Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

Not only has Eddie Murphy stepped down from his role as host of this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, but also thanks to what can politely be termed a social faux pas by Brett Ratner, the job of producer has just been handed over to Brian Grazer. Everything’s getting a reshuffle and there’s an empty spot where a host should be standing. So who should fill that spot?

The internet concludes: The Muppets!

What started out as a group on Facebook and subsequently became a Twitter page has now snowballed into a world-wide-web-wide clamouring for this to become a reality, probably because it’s a really good idea.

With their next big movie on the way, The Muppets are making a comeback (you’ve probably noticed them in a lot of headlines on Bleeding Cool because Brendon’s somewhat obsessed), and it would break the long and regrettable absence of Muppetness surrounding the Oscars.

We at Bleeding Cool are 100% behind this campaign and encourage you to lend your support. We would like to add a subclause that gives Waldorf and Statler their own balcony at the event and grants them the right to unlimited amounts of heckling.

A THOUSAND WORDS Trailer

Remember that brief moment where it looked like Eddie Murphy was going to turn his career around and go back to being that guy we all liked in the 80s? Then he dropped hosting the Oscars after his moron Tower Heist director Brett Ratner resigned, and now there’s a new trailer for another one Murphy’s high-concept “comedies”, A Thousand Words. In all fairness, Murphy made this movie almost a year ago, but it’s a strong reminder of why we all want to forget about him. The movie is about a guy who only has a thousand words left before he dies, which seems like a strong premise for a drama, but instead it looks like everyone involved said, “Let’s make Liar, Liar 2“.

HAROLD & KUMAR 3D Director Todd Strauss-Schulson in Talks to Helm FAMILY GETAWAY

Warner Bros. apparently liked the film too because THR is reporting that the studio is in early talks with Strauss-Schulson to direct Family Getaway. The movie centers on a family who discovers their patriarch is an assassin and must go on a chase to get away from a rival killer. It sounds like it could be a fun flick (I’m imagining Clark Griswold firing a sub-machine gun), and as THR notes, the road-trip structure is similar to Harold & Kumar.

Well well well, Adam Sandler's latest cinema poop is 0% on tomatometer with 33 rotten reviews. Hopefully us fans aren't subject to that gawdawful trailer at Staples Center again. I think I am still crosseyed from seeing that tool in ladies undies.

Not sure if this is the right thread for it but here goes.

Watched the first episode of Life's Too Short, the new Ricky Gervais/Stephen Merchant show starring the dwarven actor Warwick Davis. It was very funny as expected. Definitely check it out when it airs over there :)

New Line Planning New FRIDAY Movie with Ice Cube, Possibly Chris Tucker

A lot can go down between Thursday and Saturday, but it’s been almost ten years since we’ve seen a Friday movie. That could all change as New Line is in talks with Ice Cube to write, produce and star in another installment of the series. Cube executive produced and starred as Craig Jones in the 1995 original and reprised his role both on screen and off in the 2000 sequel Next Friday and 2002’s Friday After Next. Cube may also be in line to direct the next segment.

A favorite from the first movie, Smokey, played by Chris Tucker, is in talks to return for the new film. Cube apparently wants him to reprise his role but Tucker has been non-committal. Tucker and Cube were the main focus of the first movie as they spent most of the day smoking, drinking and doing all kinds of ill ****. Hit the jump for more.

Deadline reports that Tucker could have the role if he was interested, but apparently his new-found religion is giving him cause for concern. He is hesitant to return to the pot-smoking slacker he depicted in the first film. Tucker even said he regrets signing on for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown as his character’s foul-mouthed tirade portrayed him in a bad light. No word yet on Tucker’s opinion of his role as flamboyant radio host in The Fifth Element. He can next be seen in David O. Russell’s The Silver Linings Playbook.

What do you think about another installment in the Friday series? I’m personally fine with a return of Cube and Tucker. Perhaps they’ll take on more mature roles that will allow Tucker’s religion to outline Smokey’s role as “born again.” The real question is, what will the name be? A Month from Friday? Another Friday? Or, my personal choice, Last Friday? Leave your suggestions in the comments below!

Me and Kq love these movies. We will be watching the Christmas one soon for sure...'Right Buddy???'
