All Things:Fairytale Movies

Jolie looks like she might elevate this but why do these movies all visually look the same. Snow White and the Huntsman/Oz tGaP/etc. I know it's cgi, but you can differentiate the actual design scheme can't you????

Live-Action ‘Beauty and The Beast’ You Didn’t Know Existed Gets A Beautiful Trailer

There’s a good chance that you had no idea that a new live-action re-telling of the Beauty and the Beast (or La Belle et la Bete) story was on the way, but after seeing this new trailer, expect to want to see more.

The movie comes from director Christophe Gans, whose previous credits include Brotherhood of the Wolf and the first Silent Hill movie, and stars Lea Seydoux, who’s been seen in Inglourious Basterds, Robin Hood, Midnight in Paris, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Blue is the Warmest Color, and the upcoming Grand Budapest Hotel, and Vincent Cassel, who’s known from movies like Elizabeth, Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen, Eastern Promises, Black Swan, A Dangerous Method, and Trance.

Be sure to click on over to the other side now to watch the trailer for La Belle et la Bete and read a synopsis.

The trailer is gorgeous, and you can definitely see hints of Gans’ Brotherhood of the Wolf. It also has a bit of a Guillermo del Toro vibe at times, which is cool because he too has a similar project in the works

Gans' Brotherhood of the Wolf is one of those rare movies I am so glad I got to see on a big screen. Fairytale French Karate flick...yup, I believe it had everything, including a shot of mountains gradually fading into Monica Belluci's naked body...oh sure...now you want to see it.

Man...this is starting to sway me. AJ seems to be doing her best. And it looks really neat. But then so did Alice in Wonderland...and Snow White and the Seven Huntsmen, and Oz the Great and Powerful...scratch that, that one looked like overripe cgi-trash from the get-go.

Doesn't look like Maleficent is getting good reviews. Trying to turn someone who "has all the powers of HELL!" into a sympathetic figure? Come on. Smells like a cash grab on the success of Wicked.

MALEFICENT Review; MALEFICENT Stars Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning

Admittedly, this is really Jolie’s show, and she’s clearly having a blast when the movie lets her act instead of devouring her with the scenery. Jolie, when given the opportunity, can give great performances, but that seems secondary to what Stromberg is trying to accomplish. She’s a vehicle for set pieces and moving to new locales. Maleficent is a perfect fit for this movie not because she’s a good character for a redemption story, but because she can conjure CGI animation. The best scene in the film (and the one that’s in almost all of the trailers) is the recreation of the christening scene from Sleeping Beauty. It’s on a practical set with very few visual effects, and it’s mainly an interaction between Maleficent and Stefan. The scene with the greatest impact isn’t the one filled with CGI wizardly; it’s the one that relies on human performances.

I’m not against movies with plenty of CGI because most blockbusters are these days. Green screen is the present-day matte painting. But those paintings and effects are meant to service the story, not vice-versa. The movie has a worthwhile take on a famous character because villains can be more interesting when they’re misunderstood rather than bad for the sake of being bad. Maleficent is one of Disney’s best villains, and this film had the opportunity to give her new life. But Maleficent isn’t really an adaptation of Sleeping Beauty. It’s an adaptation of a screen saver.

Enjoyed Maleficent a lot. Jolie was fantastic. The CGI was well-done, but the 3D was pointless. Nothing extra to see/hear in IMAX either, so save some shekels.
