TV: Casting Underway on "American Horror Story" S2, Some S1 Actors Returning

FX president and general manager John Landgraf met the Television Critics Association to present the cable network's spring season. Taking questions, he addressed the status of "American Horror Story"'s second season and new cast.

"Ryan Murphy's already looking for that cast," Landgraf said. "He's already in active conversations with new people and also two or possibly three of the existing cast members, some series regulars or guest cast may be continuing next year although they would be playing entirely new roles."

Landgraf reiterated that he greenlit the plan to kill off the season one cast. They just didn't want the audience to know that was going to happen. "We just didn't want to tell the audience that because the experience of not knowing where it would end would be diminished, if they knew we were going to burn this cast and location to the ground."

This is something Ryan Murphy does. Maybe not on "Glee," but his previous FX show was reinvented a few times too. If you liked "nip/tuck" in L.A. (and I did. It really saved the series from the Carver and organ thieves) then "American Horror Story" is following a similar artistic path. (continued inside)

"This was something I was really excited about this idea from the get go," Landgraf said. "One of the things I think Ryan's particularly strong at is creating a really distinctive world in all its aspects. That includes the tone and mood of the place, the costume design and music, cinematography. If you looked at the way those characters were dressed, right down to Jessica Lange's wardrobe and the way her hair was style, Ryan Murphy was involved in every aspect of that. Even with nip/tuck he wanted to recreate it at a certain point so he moved it from Miami to LA. This gives him the opportunity to do that every year."

To some extent Landgraf lets Murphy do what he wants. If audiences have a hard time with the show, they're just not going to get Murphy. But there's no reigning him in.

"They have more leeway and creative freedom than most so I don't know every detail of everything they're up to, I certainly knew a lot," Landgraf said. "I knew the entire family was going to die by the end of the season. One of my biggest concerns about the piece is that the nature of the genre is that you're always ahead of the protagonist. You know things the protagonist doesn't know so we knew that certain critics and audiences would get frustrated with the leads. It's just a classic rule of storytelling the leads should know more than the audience, or at least not less. After the lead characters were dead and knew everything, they were at least by the end of the piece able to recapture their status as leads. The final episode where Vivien and Ben Harmon spook the new couple out of the house was the first time in 7 or 8 episodes where they were ahead of the audience. It was an experiment. I didn't know if that would alienate the audience. It didn't in terms of viewership. That's Ryan. He's going to push the form and go to places you wouldn't expect."

The FX thriller from "Glee" co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk capped off its first season run with a record 3.22 million viewers -- a strong finish for the top-rated first season series in the network's history, said THR back in December.

The finale, which drew mixed reviews from critics, delivered 2.2 million viewers in the coveted 18 to 49 demographic, and ranked as cable's No. 1 program in all of key demos Wednesday. Once DVR viewership is factored in for what Nielsen named the year's most time-shifted program, the final tally will likely exceed 5 million total viewers.

TCA: FX's 'Powers' Still in Limbo - Hollywood Reporter

Calling it one as difficult an adaptation as he's ever worked on, FX president and GM John Landgraf updated reporters Sunday on the cabler's buzzy graphic novel adaptation Powers.

"We didn't pick the pilot of Powers up; we went back and Chick Eglee, who had written it, did a fairly substantial rewrite that would require pretty extensive reshoots of the pilot," Landgraf said. "Right now we're in the process of deciding whether to pull the trigger on the reshoot."

The network topper also told reporters during his executive session that FX is looking to add a pair of new dramas in the coming year. The cabler in November passed on Southern Crime pilot Outlaw Country, starring Mary Steenburgen.

Beyond Powers, FX has Joe Weisberg's KGB spy drama The Americans as a pilot in contention for series order.

We went back and Chuck Eglee, who had written that, did a fairly substantial rewrite that would require pretty extensive re-shoots of the pilot. Right now, we’re in the process of deciding whether to pull the trigger on that re-shoot. I’ll say that I really adore the underlying material. Also, Brian Bendis, who’s been a fantastic partner on the project, has been with it, from the beginning.


This is as difficult an adaptation as I’ve ever worked on. But, I worked on Karen Sisco. I was an executive producer of it. That was a failed Elmore Leonard show. And then, we went right back around and made an Elmore Leonard show with Justified. That, to me, is my penance to Elmore Leonard for not getting Karen Sisco quite right. So, difficult adaptations interest me, but this is a really hard one.


When you think about a 10 o’clock drama, like The Sopranos, or any sort of serious drama, there’s never been either a theatrical feature film or a television series that’s taken the superhero genre into that type of tonality. It’s never been done, and it’s just really a struggle. But, until Game of Thrones, I don’t think anybody had ever taken the fantasy genre into a 10 o’clock drama territory either. I have enormous respect for HBO, and for David Benioff and everybody who was involved in that show because they managed to pull it off. So, it can be done. It’s just proving really difficult.

Landgraf is the BEST exec in TV today, so if it doesn't get made it won't be for lack of trying.

All these dudes show up in the first few episodes of this, the third season on FX’s ever-improving Elmore Leonard series Justified. Add to that the continued presence of Jere Burns, Natalie Zea, Nick Searcy (who has a powerhouse interrogation scene), Jeremy Davies (somehow channeling his annoyingness into good work), and the delicious twosome of Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins.

Seriously, Goggins deserves a lifetime achievement award for just this and The Shield.

The reason for this article is to say that if you love Justified, this season is so far the strongest and most enriching yet. By a large margin. The dialogue is better, the actors are at home in their characters like never before, and even the characters sent to the periphery are getting quality screen time. If you love it, you’ll love it more despite the loss of Margo Martindale and her award winning presence.

If you don’t yet love it, now is the time. It’s a top five show on television right now. With some of the stuff on FX, HBO, Showtime, and AMC that’s saying something.

And I didn’t even mention Carla Gugino.

An animated series about two teens with no parental guidance, “Unsupervised” is a the brainchild of writer-actor David Hornsby, who also wrote and starred in the horrible (and quickly cancelled) Thursday night CBS sitcom “How To Be A Gentleman.”

“Unsupervised” is also a terrible show, and does itself no favors by arriving so soon after the triumphant return of Mike Judge’s much, much better “Beavis and “Butthead” over on MTV. Big talents like Justin Long, Fred Armisen, Maria Bamford and Kristin Bell lend their voices to little avail.

As far as Justified...the first 10 minutes were priceless. Walton Goggins is simply sick and the back and forth between him and Raylen was brilliant. Raylen is a little under fire after season 2, from his boss and his coworkers...so that cool cowboy exterior ain't working as well. But the one thing this show does really well is supporting cast. I have always liked Neil McDonough so I am very happy he seems to be part of the big bad this season. I found myself laughing out loud a few times during the episode. Just good stuff. I think it's gonna be another great season.
 
I think my favorite character in that show is probably his boss, played by Nick Searcy. He gets a lot of the funny lines.

Yeah the whole 'That's my job' exchange was just another example of the organic humor in this show.

Finally saw the season opener for Justified and I must say I'm really pleased with this show yet again. Great writing, great acting and as witty and funny as ever. I'm hearing that this season is the strongest ever which is quite a feat in itself. Can't wait to see where this all heads.

Best line: Sorry about your tablecloth.
