"You know...I was on Jeopardy once..."

Review: 'The Leftovers' pays 'Sopranos' homage with wild 'International Assassin'

The audience for "The Leftovers" is far smaller than "The Sopranos" fanbase, and smaller even than its low-rated first season(*). The viewers who are left, I'm assuming, have gone all-in with the show's strangeness, its unconventional narrative choices, and its unflinching commitment to its themes about grief, spirituality, and madness. And, therefore, I'd like to think that "International Assassin" — which resolved last week's Kevin cliffhanger in the weirdest, most unexpected, and more than slightly Kevin Finnerty-ish way possible — was right up their alley. But I'm going to be especially curious to see the comments on this one, because this was something unusual, to be sure(**).

(*) To answer your question, I have no idea what HBO's executives will do. They don't care about ratings, and the overall reviews have been much stronger this season (hell, even Damon Lindelof's nemesis Andy Greenwald has been converted to the cause), but is that enough?

I am extremely concerned that HBO might pull the plug on this terrific show...

If this was truly the end of _____, ___ will be missed. Nice return of some of the other characters from the first season. That episode was so wonderfully odd. Good stuff. Only 2 left, possibly for good.

My satellite TV was finally installed, so I can catch up on a bunch of stuff now. I was wondering how the new season of The Leftovers was going, but it sounds like it's worth watching!

The Knick S2 is just fantastic. If you missed how someone died a few Eps ago, it was just unbelievable.

I've been binging on "The Leftovers" for the last week, starting with EP1 S01. Just watched "International Assassin." Holy ****. I thought Mr. Robot was a ****ed up show, but this takes the cake for WTFiness. This episode... Damn. Just had to get that off my chest. OK, on to EP 09.

It is the perfect show to binge simply because waiting for the next episode is brutal...

I am heartsick thinking that may have been the last of THE LEFTOVERS. That being said, what a perfect ending to an unbelievable season 2. An hour later, I am still trying to decipher what I watched...in a good way. Many a tear was shed...and good lord...that music!!!!

Please HBO...don't quit on this show.

I was really wondering for a few seconds there what the song was he was going to sing - and could there have been a better song for that scene? The first time I ever heard that song was in a most perfect way possible - on an SNL rerun, an amazing short film by Gary Weis. Ever since, one of my favorite songs. If you've never seen the "music video" you owe it to yourself. Have a tissue handy.

Articles I have read state that they wanted Like A Prayer, which is highlighted on the wheel behind him. But Madonna would not give permission. Good, because the earnestness in his voice, and the welling tears...and the lyrics, were just an outstanding combination. *tears*

By the way, unsure if it was episode 9 or 10...I watched em back to back, but Lindelhoff got a nice final parting shot in on the folks who gripe about LOST. When Meg went to the palm reader, he told her over and over "you won't like the answer...(sic) I can tell you, but it's not what you want to hear, so you won't like it..."
I understand he is still so very raw over the backlash, but that shot should be the final one. Time to let it go.

Damon Lindelof on 'The Leftovers': 'I'm fighting for the life of the show'

Nice post mortem from a guy who seems to almost have ptsd from the LOST criticisms. Basically he says in the interview that he would not be available for press if he wasn't trying to keep the show alive.

After living with it overnight (and it actually kept me up...) I am reading a lot of reviews where they profess their love, and yet, make a good argument why it should end where it has. I am torn. If they do go out with that finale' it really does stand up. But maybe they have even BETTER stories left to tell...

I really only wanted to know what was up with the Jesus dude on the little tower thing and the water missing.

HBO Renews ‘The Leftovers’ for a Third and Final Season
http://collider.com/the-leftovers-season-3-renewed-damon-lindelof/

Ok. Bittersweet. One more go, but it's the end. All in all, that may be a great way to finish. This way the writers will know not to leave anything back and they can actually CONCLUDE the story. I KNOW they won't answer all the questions. But I am already waiting impatiently for them to answer SOME of them. THANK YOU HBO, from the bottom of my heart.

In a statement, Lindelof praised the support of HBO and added that he’s eager to tell the final chapter in the Leftovers story:

“I have never, ever experienced the level of creative support and trust that I have received from HBO during the last two seasons of THE LEFTOVERS,” says Damon Lindelof. “Tom, myself and our incredible team of writers and producers put tremendous care into designing those seasons as novels unto themselves…with beginnings, middles and ends. As we finished our most recent season, it became clear to us that the series as a whole was following the same model…and with our beginning and middle complete, the most exciting thing for us as storytellers would be to bring THE LEFTOVERS to a definitive end. And by ‘definitive,’ we mean ‘wildly ambiguous but hopefully mega-emotional,’ as all things related to this show are destined to be.

On behalf of our incredible crew and superb cast, we are all tremendously grateful that HBO is giving us an opportunity to conclude the show on our own terms…an opportunity like this one rarely comes along, and we have every intention of living up to it. One more thing. We are blessed by the unwavering support of our fans and the incredibly powerful voice of the critical community. We feel absolutely privileged to heat up one last helping of leftovers.”

It's a Miracle: HBO renews 'The Leftovers' for third and final season

There's a catch, albeit one that "Leftovers" co-creator Damon Lindelof specifically asked for: the third season will be the final one.

Lindelof has been candid about how tough the show is to make, saying that he "was really depressed" making the first season. The reason renewal took so long last time was because Lindelof wasn't sure he wanted to do more episodes after that experience.

Ok, that seals it even further. I am sure HBO wasn't going to extend it further than one season, but Lindelof himself requesting it be the final season makes me even more confident that the right decisions were made.
