All Things HORROR

Fantastic Fest Review: Proxy | Shock Till You Drop

Proxy does slow down a little at the halfway point. The first hour (at two hours it does run a bit long) is almost nonstop surprises and craziness, and the rampant unpredictability comes to an end after a shocking scene in Melanie’s house. The second hour focuses more on the mundane, following characters at work or arguing with others or having lunch, and it drags a little.

That first hour is remarkable though, and the last 15 or so minutes of this puzzling, unnerving movie are nearly as great. Even after two hours, most of the characters are hard to figure out. Much less difficult to decipher is the notion that after this story of madness and violence in small town America and the equally intriguing and unsettling Scalene, director Zack Parker is a major talent.

Ok, bump this up to top of the WANNASEE list. Keep hearing how bat**** crazy/different this is, and Scalene is a terrific little indie horror flick.

Review: Vincenzo Natali's 'Haunter' Starring Abigail Breslin | The Playlist

There are long stretches of the movie where literally nothing happens, and Lisa is just crawling around and digging up carpet and trying to put the pieces together. We're all for "deliberate pacing," but this is better described as "patience testing." None of the spark or verve that is present in Natali's other films, including the often imitated "Cube" (which has inspired everything from the first "Resident Evil" film to the entirety of the "Saw" franchise), is present here. It's as dusty as a Victorian ghost story without any of the actual scares. And what's truly depressing, especially after "Splice," one of the more openly confrontational movies released by a major studio in recent years (one that challenged gender roles and made audience members of either sex cross their legs in discomfort), is how timid and apolitical "Haunted" is. The scenario is ripe for metaphoric embellishment but Natali chooses to leave it alone. He probably thinks he's doing something that is both classical and irreverent, flipping the ghost story on its ear. But instead it's utterly unconvincing and not scary in the slightest. And maybe that's Natali being unexpected again – no one could have known he would make a movie this bland. [D]

Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe in the Works from Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman | Collider

In a recent interview with IGN, Orci says they’re looking to go make sure their lead characters move over into other movies [via CS]:

“There’s an interesting thing that could happen at Universal where they have this amazing library of their old monsters and these kinds of heroes, and the idea of trying to create a universe. Van Helsing, and we’re also producing The Mummy for them. We’re kind of imagining updating these kinds of things. You don’t want to just make remakes when you’re doing a thing, unless it’s worthy of being a remake, but when you have an idea for something that can actually be made different and yet be true to what it was. We just had a notion of how to make it modern and have a slightly different tone. It’s not going to be just a remake.”

In my opinion...the reason why these relaunches don't work is that they try too hard to update modernize characters that are beautiful in there simplicity. I do not want a cgi Creature from the Black Lagoon/Wolf Man. But that's a double edger because young audiences won't necessarily flock to old school production values. Some things simply don't carry over, and despite how good the classic monsters are their time may have passed.

24Framespersecond.net - In A Nutshell: V/H/S/2 Review

Found footage thrillers have been done to death of course, but V/H/S/2 injects new life into a tired format, and Safe Haven is worth the price of the DVD alone. Recommended.
Safe Haven is one of the best short films you are ever likely to see. Words cannot describe how satisfying this installment is, which could also be the films undoing, because nothing else comes close to this blistering installment.

24Framespersecond.net - Irish horror CITADEL: DVD review

What starts out as a very good, powerful drama with a fantastic performance from the main character is ultimately let down by a bad story, with pointless horror connotations. A Citadel, according to the Cambridge dictionary is "a strong castle in or near a city, where people can shelter from danger". So why this movie is called Citadel is anyone’s guess. It's a powerful title that ultimately adds to the disappointment.

It's been a long time since I saw the first one, but at the time I didn't like it enough to care about the sequels. Even though Bruce Campbell.

Guess I should give it another shot.

Bruce Campbell Continues to Toy with Emotions of People Who Want ARMY OF DARKNESS 2 | Collider

Even though Army of Darkness is a cult film and its fans would desperately like for Bruce Campbell to pick up a chainsaw and a shotgun again so he can reprise his role as Ash. Army of Darkness came out in 1992, and where there’s hope for a sequel, there are rumors. Campbell and director Sam Raimi always dance around the possibility of a sequel and come right up to the line of saying they’re doing it, but legitimate pre-production never gets underway. Today, that tradition continues as Campbell talked to an audience at Wizard World Nashville Comic Con, and said “I just haven’t been racing to do it. Sam Raimi is just a little bit busy making the biggest movies in Hollywood. I use to be busy. Now I’m not. That’s why I’m here.” That should have been the end of it, but of course, it wasn’t.

Hit the jump for a description of how Campbell sees an old Ash fighting evil, and for a misleading confirmation about the movie.

Campbell told the crowd at Nashville Comic Con [via Comicbook.com] that this new Ash would have to take the actor’s age into consideration:

“Ash would have to stop occasionally from chasing some deadite to catch his breath. Maybe we could do that, I guess. That would be exciting. Fight in a walker. That would be alright. Hit them with my cane. Fake them out, have a fake heart attack, distract a zombie. I like it.”

I like it too, especially in Campbell’s 2002 movie, Bubba Ho-Tep where he played a geriatric Elvis fighting a mummy.

But to come back to the original question of “Are you going to make a sequel to Army of Darkness?”, Campbell replied, “Alright sir, the answer is yes.”

That seems like a confirmation that the movie is a go, but it’s not. Raimi could be working on a script, but where’s the studio that’s going to back a sequel to a 21-year-old cult movie? Raimi’s 2009 film Drag Me to Hell, which comes off like a cousin to Evil Dead II, proves that someone would be willing to indulge his “spook-a-blast” tendencies, but Campbell saying he’ll do Army of Darkness 2 isn’t a surprise. The surprise will be when production begins in earnest.

I feel optimistic. After holding fans at arms length for so long it really does seem like the intent is there.

A bloody ballad of @EliRoth 's GREEN INFERNO, by the AICNer that served me up to the Cannibal Genre! - Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.

One of the true coups of The Green Inferno is Eli's wise insistence upon shooting along the legendary Werner Herzog waters of South America and utilizing a local jungle tribe to play the multiple roles of the cannibals portrayed in the film. Not only are they frighteningly realistic, but not for one moment does the viewer feel an ounce of hope for their helpless captives, especially when the superior skills exhibited by KNB Makeup Effects prove once again why they are the best in the business. These hapless Americans seem to be consumed right in front of our eyes with enough cannibalistic gusto to turn Deodato, Lenzi, and D'Amato green with envy. The practical effects are many & great, and are executed to near perfection as each “victim” meets their own grisly fate one after the other. I was relieved (yet none surprised) that the gore was both brilliantly executed and was very much in abundance, as it should be in any respectable cannibal film. There’s more than enough viscera on display here to challenge an R-rating, yet the lack of a show-stopping genital mutilation scene left me feeling a bit conflicted. Eli alludes to said genital torture early in the film, but I can only conclude that the MPAA is to blame for the lack of a payoff in that regard. Novices to this particular subgenre of film and those who consider themselves less of a gorehound will probably be happy to have been spared.

believe it when I see it...

Clive Barker to Pen HELLRAISER Remake with Doug Bradley Returning as Pinhead | Collider

HOT FROM HELL! My friends,I have some news which may be of interest to you. A few weeks ago I had a very productive meeting with Bob Weinstein of Dimension Pictures,in the course of which I pitched a remake of the first HELLRAISER film. The idea of my coming back to the original film and telling the story with a fresh intensity-honoring the structure and the designs from the first incarnation but hopefully creating an even darker and richer film-was attractive to Dimension. Today I have officially been invited to write the script based upon that pitch. What can I tell you about it?Well, it will not be a film awash with CGI. I remain as passionate about the power of practical make-up effects as I was when I wrote and directed the first HELLRAISER. Of course the best make-up in the world loses force if not inhabited by a first-rate actor. I told the Dimension team that in my opinion there could never be a Pinhead without Doug Bradley, and much to my delight Bob Weinstein agreed. So once the papers are signed , I will open a Lemarchand Configuration, dip my quill in its contents and start writing . I promise that there will be nowhere on the Internet where the news of my progress will be more reliable than here ,because the only author of these reports will be Your Infernal Corespondent ,me. My very best wishes to you
all,my friends.
Clive.

Sam Raimi Confirmed To Direct 'Army of Darkness 2'! -

Really feels like this is the closest this movie has come to being a reality. Thank you Burn Notice...if you hadn't closed it out The Chin might not need the work.

And slightly related...I saw the ED remake again in the interest of seeing if my original dislike was due to high expectations. Well...it wasn't. First off, it wasn't scary, wasn't over the top violent and the end of the movie really really dragged. And, this is a personal issue, TOO MUCH animal violence.
