All Things HORROR

Oculus Blu-ray

The structural ingenuity on display in Oculus bodes very well for the future of Flanagan, though he needs to make sure his third act builds on the momentum of the first two, rather than just coasting, as seems to be the case with this film. I personally would have liked Oculus better had there been a bit of ambiguity about whether Tim was bat guano crazy or not, but the simultaneous unfolding of two disparate (and desperate) stories makes this a thrill ride quite a bit of the time. Technical merits here are first rate, and despite some stumbles in the late going, Oculus comes Recommended.

First trailer for new horror flick Cub is the scariest thing we've seen all week | Blastr

Here’s the official synopsis:

Cub is a horror adventure in which a young imaginative twelve-year-old boy named Sam heads off to camp with his Cub Scouts pack, leaders Peter and Chris and quartermaster Yasmin. Once they enter the woods, Sam quickly feels something is not quite right. He soon stumbles upon a mysterious tree house and meets a shifty, masked feral-looking child.

When Sam tries to warn his leaders, they ignore him: the boy often tells tall tales and Sam’s mysterious past which he refuses to talk about makes his leader Peter mistrust him. As Sam gets more and more isolated from the other scouts, he becomes convinced a terrible fate awaits them: the Feral Child, it turns out, is the helper of the Poacher, an evil psychopath, who has riddled the forest with ingenious traps and is intent on slaughtering the scouts… one by one…

This looks AWESOME. But, if they punk out on killing kids, I will be genuinely disappointed. Seems to be the whole point of the trailer.

DEAD SNOW 2: RED VS. DEAD Review | Film Stars Vegar Hoel

Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead has its flaws, but for what it’s trying to achieve, it’s pretty close to being spot-on. If you’re a fan of the first film, you’ll lose your mind over the second installment. If you thought Dead Snow would be your thing but never really took to it, there’s a good shot Dead Snow 2 might do the trick. However, if obscene humor, violence targeting the handicapped and children, and outrageously grotesque imagery are not your thing, stay far away. (But you should probably just lighten up and give it a go because you’ll be missing out big time.)

Lively discussion pro and con towards the first one. Mixed bag and I thought when it did get it right(or really really wrong) it was awesome enough to cover the not so good vignettes. Your mileage may vary but this looks like another bit of fun.

"The Mold Knows": Jeffrey Combs Stars In 'Motivational Growth' (Trailer) -

“The Mold knows, Jack. The Mold knows.”

A new trailer has been released for Don Thacker’s sleeper festival-hit Motivational Growth (starring Re-Animator star Jeffrey Combs). The film will hit VOD worldwide on September 30th (via Devolver Films and Indiecan Entertainment in Canada), Blu-Ray & DVD in Canada on the same date, and DVD in the US the following week (via Parade Deck Films), on October 7th.

In Motivational Growth, “Ian Foliver (Adrian DiGiovanni), a depressed and reclusive man in his 30s, finds himself taking advice from a growth in his bathroom after a failed suicide attempt. The Mold (Jeffrey Combs), a smooth talking fungus born of the filth in a neglected bathroom, works to help Ian clean himself up and remodel his lifestyle. The Mold has big plans for Ian, but they may not be as innocent as they seem. A labyrinthine-narrative follows, full of colorfully-drawn characters and gruesome body horror.”

Heard this was whacky and fun(depending on your sensibilities).
