HAROLD & KUMAR Director Todd Strauss-Schulson to Helm Horror Comedy FINAL GIRLS

One of the big surprises of the year (at least for me), was the enthusiastically positive critical response to A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas. I figured fans of the series would enjoy the pic, but the goofy spirit of the duo’s Christmas adventure seemed to enrapture critics across the country. Hot off the success of that film, director Todd Strauss-Schulson has landed the horror comedy Final Girls. Described as a mix between Back to the Future and Friday the 13th, the film centers on a young girl mourning the loss of her mother who was a scream queen in the 1980s. “When she and her friends are mysteriously sucked into the world of her mother’s most famous horror movie, Max is reunited with her mom and must face the pic’s crazed killer.”

If they want this to have real geek cred they need to cast Jamie Lee Curtis or (off the board choice) Linnea Quigley as the mom.

There are certain places in this world that you just shouldn't visit. Places in which things so hideous have occurred that negative energy cannot help but be left behind. With his film The Road director Yam Laranas not only takes you to such a place, but he leaves you stranded there white-knuckled and helpless.

The film focuses on a stretch of abandoned road somewhere in the Philippines where twelve years ago two sisters disappeared without a trace. The case remained unsolved, but now, over a decade later, three more teens go missing in the same area. Families are distraught, police are baffled and you the viewer are drawn into the mystery and horror of a nightmare happening before your very eyes. To tell you anything more about The Road's storyline would do you a complete disservice as this journey is one of discovery riddled with twists and turns that make sense instead of just being tacked on for shock value that never really pays off.

The Road is a slow-burn ghost story. One that's very deliberate in its pacing. Director Laranas (coming from a background as a cinematographer) displays a keen eye for shot composition and as a result manages to conjure some of the most truly unsettling moments we've seen all year. Couple that with rock-solid and believable casting along with a haunting score by Johan S?derqvist (Let the Right One In), and we have a true winner hampered only by a few pacing issues that by the time the credits roll are easy to forgive.

Told in non-linear fashion, The Road does a great job of explaining (while not over-explaining) the history of this accursed location and the events which transpired to make it that very dark place that people only whisper about while telling ghost stories. The experience is as incredibly creepy as it is fulfilling.

Every frame of The Road oozes with atmosphere and dread. The film is beautifully shot, incredibly intense, and as frightening as they come. You may not know the name Yam Laranas just yet, but get used to it as we have a feeling it's one we are going to be hearing for some time to come. Take the ride. There's no turning back.

BD Horror News - Xavier Gens Enters 'House of Horror', Huge News Forthcoming

Bloody Disgusting learned today that Xavier Gens is now getting behind the camera for House of Horror, the James Wan-produced haunted house horror flick that was penned by newcomer Max La Bella. STYD first reported.

In addition, we've learned that a MAJOR studio is about to get behind the production. Watch for that update soon. Gens directed Frontier(s) and Anchor Bay's forthcoming The Divide. Wan is the co-creator of the Saw franchise, and directed both Insidious and Dead Silence.

Javier Gutierrez was once attached and is now said to be in talks to replace Juan Carlos Fresnadillo for Relativity's The Crow reboot, although that's a little too early to say.

"The Devil made me do it.

The House of Horror is a horror-thriller that centers around a gruesome crime scene. The film is shot with a blend of found footage, interrogation video, news cameras and classical cinematography. The film focuses on the aftermath of a horrific massacre; five college students, brutally murdered inside a decrepit, abandoned home.

We are thrown right into the mix as the lead Detective, Mark Lewis, and the police department’s psychologist, Dr. Elizabeth Klein, question a suspect. The young man at the center is John Ascot, bound by handcuffs in a mobile command station. During the interrogation, John explains everything leading up to the deaths of his friends.

We discover that they were amateur ghost-hunters, seeking out paranormal phenomenon at the abandoned house believed to be haunted. What started out as a harmless activity turned into something truly terrifying and more than they ever could bargain for. John explains to the police that he isn’t responsible for his friends’ deaths, but rather, it was the house. He tells them he believes the house is a gateway to hell; a place of concentrated evil.

We slowly witness an eerie change in John's demeanor through the course of the movie. Things take a disturbing turn when John hints at the notion that he is possessed by the Devil. Detective Lewis and Dr. Klein are forced to unravel the mystery of how John’s friends were murdered. All this leads to a stunning revelation about the man they’ve been interrogating and a gut-wrenching conclusion."

BD Horror News - Gary Busey, Farting Cows and Hundreds of 'Piranha'!

The best part about films casting a bunch of oddball ex-stars is that they'll talk to any press about their roles without conscious. Meaning, they'll reveal everything if you ask nicely. Such the case with Gary Busey, who stars in Dimension Films' Piranha 3DD. Re-teaming Feast director John Gulager with writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, we were expecting awesomeness on this level:

"I play a farmer," Busey tells Empire Magazine. "A cow explodes because of its farting ability and out of it come hundreds of piranha, raining down on me. You'll see how I treat one of them."

If that's just a tease of how weird things get in Piranha 3DD it makes me think they took the sequel in the correct direction. Piranha 3D took itself way too serious. Point: David Hasselhoff stars in this one....

BD Horror News - [Interview] Broken Lizard's Paul Soter On His New Horror Film 'Dark Circles'!

If you’ve seen any of the Broken Lizard movies then you’re certainly familiar with Paul Soter, a key member of the group who not only performs in films like Beerfest, Super Troopers, The Slammin’ Salmon and their horror-comedy Club Dread but helps shape their material as a writer as well.

While Broken Lizard is still alive and well, Soter has now decided to step out on his own every now and then with the express purpose of wading deep into one of his favorite genres - horror.

I caught up with Soter a few weeks ago to talk about his transition into a new genre and what real-life events inspired him to write and direct his first full-on horror feature, Dark Circles, starring Pell James (The Lincoln Lawyer, Zodiac) and Jonathan Schaech (The Doom Generation, Prom Night,Quarantine).

In the film, "When new parents Alex and Penny retreat from the city and move into a place outside town, the stress and massive sleep-deprivation caused by their infant has both of them seeing things in the house that may or may not exist. Persistent sightings of a strange woman has each of them wondering if they are suffering from hallucinations, or if their new home holds a dark, supernatural presence. As their fragile grasp on reality spirals into delirium, Alex and Penny find themselves nearly helpless to deal with the horrific truth of what is really going in this house."


Does Dark Circles have any comedic elements or is it a pretty big departure? “There’s no attempt for it to be a crossover or a hybrid. It’s more of a pure horror thriller. If there are light moments it’s in the way a married couple will talk to each other when they’re miserable, things go so bad for these people that you just have to sit back and make a little joke about how *****ed they are. So there are moments like that, but the idea is to make a horror movie.”

So it’s definitely a break from Club Dread? “I look at ‘Club Dread’ and I like it. I enjoy it, but that was where I learned how difficult achieving that tonal balance [between comedy and horror] can be. ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ did it. I think ‘Student Bodies’ did it. It’s a hard thing to do and I’m glad we took a stab at it but it’s a hard little tonal tightrope to walk.”

Created, written and directed by Spider One, Apt. 13 stars Adam Carr as Dracula, Kurt Sholler as the Frankenstein monster, Nick Kreiss as the Wolfman, Eric Price as the Mummy, and Leah Munson as the Girl. It takes a look at what happens when a bunch of golden age monsters end up in a "Golden Girls" type sitcom complete with canned laughter and leaky bladders!

Morarles to Helm Abortion-Themed "Horror" Film - ShockTillYouDrop.com

The director of Humanimal, Francesc Morales, is embarking on a new endeavor called Apio Verde.

Screen Daily reports the film is a psychological thriller set in Chile that is about "a young woman waiting to give birth to a son with a terminal disease."

The story touches on therapeutic abortion (illegal in Chile) and, according to Morales, is said to start as a drama and end as a horror film. "The story is based on lives of many real people and it also shows how politics and religion get involved on a subject like this. Yet the movie is not a drama, but a thriller that states how this is not only an attempt to the human rights but also a situation that always leads to a violent resolution," Morales told SD.

His previous effort, Mumanimal featured actors dressed in animal costumes and told of a turtle vying for a cat's affections. So...yeah, we might get something interesting with Apio Verde.

Adam Green Talks Hatchet III and Holliston | Horror Movie, DVD, & Book Reviews, News, Interviews at Dread Central

As for the series "Holliston," which posits Green and Lynch as two aspiring filmmakers who host a late-night cable access program titled "The Movie Crypt" (FEARnet is describing the series as "Wayne’s World meets Saw") Green said, “We just wrapped production, and last night in Austin, Texas, Joe [Lynch] and I did a charity event for disabled veterans where we showed some of Chillerama and then we showed the first ever footage from "Holliston", and I was very nervous because it’s a real sitcom and not one that makes fun of or is an homage to sitcoms, so I didn’t know what to expect of their reaction. You could tell during the first two minutes that the crowd was like, ‘Holy ****, this is so weird,’ and then they were so into it by the end. When we finished with the last clip, it was like an uproarious cheering applause, which was a great start to it. I hope the horror community gets behind it because it’s a risky thing for FEARnet to produce. It’s going to be their first show, and we aren’t doing what anyone expects. We are making a sitcom for our audience and our friends if they talked about the kind of stuff that we are into and if they randomly stabbed each other sometimes. Random acts of violence and the fact that [GWAR’s] Oderus Urungus is my character’s imaginary friend on the show? No other network would allow us to do that.”
