Piranha 3DD was just a mess. Maybe the best false advertising of the year so far: Less blood/gore/T&A/plot/everything. The first movie was actually decent and you know, watchable. This one? Ugh.

Characters have nothing going-on and some are briefly intro'd and then disposed-of. Danielle Panabaker was the best actor in a small list of folks who may not have ever acted before. Location of a water-park could've been decent, but was misused. 3D was shaky/jarring for most underwater scenes but otherwise decent. CGI was spotty at best.

Final verdict, save your money and rewatch the first one. This was dumped into 100 theatres for a reason.

saw this the same day as Cabin in the Woods, and like that movie, it was extremely inventive and not like anything else I have seen. Elements of Breakfast Club, Donnie Darko and crystal meth abuse combine to make a movie that I need to see another time or two before I can even say whether it all works or not. It is definitely worth seeing though, but you may want to rent it before you buy it.
 
Another Controversial Serbian Film Heading to Blu-ray

Synapse Films have officially announced that they will release on Blu-ray Serbian director Mladen Djordjevic's controversial film The Life and Death of a Porno Gang (2009), starring Mihajlo Jovanovic, Ana Acimovic and Predrag Damnjanovic. Street date is August 14th.

During the final days of Slobodan Miloševic's Serbian rule, a young film student named Marko becomes desperate to make a feature film. Finally getting a job as an adult film director, he quickly runs afoul of the mob and needs to get out of town fast! Assembling a traveling group of misfits into a "porno cabaret," Marko and his new friends drive though the quiet countryside in a beat-up van performing live sex acts for peasants and farmers. But life is hard on the road, and they find it hard to earn enough money to survive.

What was most threatening to youth in the 1980s? Thermonuclear war? The Tylenol scare? Leg warmers? According to this old 20/20 report, it was the orgy of blood spewing from horror films lurking in neighborhood video shops.

It must have been a slow news week for 20/20 to scrape together this salacious special alert on the corrosive effects of violent horror movies. Hugh Downs and Barbara Walters actually try to sell this shoddy segment with straight faces and wafer-thin logic.

See dazed children foam at the mouth while giggling along with Ash's Evil Dead antics! Watch a conservative coven of high-collared mothers in pearls rant on the perils and pitfalls of the dreaded splatter movies infecting the shelves of your local video store, dispensed with demented glee by the shifty-eyed owner to innocent sons and daughters! You'll run screaming from your laptop!

Los Angeles! See A Nightmare on Elm Street in a Cemetery This Weekend! | Shock Till You Drop

Every summer, Cinespia blocks off a chunk of time to give Los Angeles residents a chance to see select films in the famous Hollywood Forever Cemetery. The events are all about the experience. Bring friends, food, booze (or your choice of non-alcoholic drink) and have fun.

This weekend - Saturday, June 9th - Cinespia is holding its first genre film screening of the season: Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street.

The gates of the cemetery (located at 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard) open at 7pm and a $10 ticket donation is available at the entrance. Get there early as lines do tend to form early and you'll definitely want a nice spot on the cemetery lawn. The film is projected along the side of a mausoleum.

Lovely Molly Blu-ray

In August, Image Home Entertainment will bring Lovely Molly to Blu-ray. Directed by Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project), this chiller stars Gretchen Lodge, in her film debut, as a young woman haunted by bizarre and terrifying visions.

From Sony's official synopsis:

"When newlywed Molly Reynolds (Lodge) moves back into her long-abandoned childhood home, she begins to experience unnerving and impossible things. What starts as a simple story about things that go bump in the night escalates into a battle for dominion over Molly's spirit, as she is beset by a cunning, malevolent force bent on wreaking havoc and terror on Molly and her family."

Image's Blu-ray presents the film in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track. The distributor has not yet listed any bonus supplements.

Lovely Molly is expected to street on August 28th.

V/H/S Poster is Clever and Familiar | Shock Till You Drop

Magnolia has released the poster for V/H/S, which premiered at Sundance and features the works of filmmakers Adam Wingard, Ti West, David Bruckner, Glenn McQuaid, Joe Swanberg and the team known as Radio Silence.

The poster, to me at least, is a nice throwback to Visiting Hours, although the two films are vastly different, of course.

The film is making its way to VOD on August 31st and then rolling into a limited theatrical run on October 5th. Head inside for a larger look at the poster.

When a group of misfits is hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house and acquire a rare VHS tape, they discover more found footage than they bargained for.
