What were everyone's favorite horror films of 2012?
Ok. I'll bite.
Revenant:saw it at ScreamfestLa in 2009(?) but it finally got the release this year. Dvd only, heavy rotation currently on CINEMAX. Faulty(first time film maker) yet full of genius ideas and really something raw and special
The Possession: Jewish take on the Exorcist, lots of tropes...yet excels in character development and great acting. Man crush on Jeffrey Dean Morgan aside, this is solid across the board.
Cabin in the Woods: Needed more Mermen, but just one of the best horror flicks I have seen...ever.
The Woman in Black: Lovely re-introduction to the HAMMER FILMS brand. Old school atmosphere with a great performance by 'arry Potter. Deserved a better fate but it is far too old fashioned to connect with the young crowd who went to see Radcliffe. I wish him well in shaking the Potter mantle. I think he is a very solid young actor.
Detention: As divisive as it is fun. Breakfast Club meets Donnie Darko with ADD. You will know if you liked it or not if you can endure it. Not for everyone.
The Hole:HAVE NOT SEEN IT YET...but the simple fact that Joseph Dante is making movies again is enough to warrant a mention.
The Devil Inside: yeah...I liked it. Despite the
'is a reel missing' ending it worked for this lapsed Catholic boy.
The Collection: Nice follow up to the dirty dirty Collector. Different type of movie, so it was satisfying...and they did not over explain the mythology behind a nice creation. Solid performances, decent grue...and a nice story.
The Theater Bizarre: Really good anthology...as always, some better than others...but solid throughout. Some real creepy moments and good ideas.
Sadly my list of WORST movies far outweighs the highlights. I won't go into them here...(V/H/S)...but I hope this helps. I did not see a few...Excision, Yam Laranas The Road, Rec 3 and others that may be worth viewing, so...apologies.
BTW...where is Sinister you ask? well, yeah...it had some great 'I could use a shower' moments...the 8mm films and especially the lawn mower(if you saw it...you know). But the WriterWithAHistoryDescendingIntoMadness gig has been done to death(see Secret Window/The Dark Half/countless others). Extra points for the dark ending...but something just wasn't right. Now that I reflect on it, I wonder if maybe I need to rewatch...for a mass appeal flick it WAS pretty dark. Hurm. Ok...so I guess it merits a watch just so you can judge for yourself. I initially thought it was a little cliche' but upon reflection I wonder if I was just being harsh.
