Theatre Bizarre, The (2011) | Horror Movie, DVD, & Book Reviews, News, Interviews at Dread Central

The Theatre Bizarre is easily one of the best horror anthology films not just recently, but in the history of the sub-genre. Each director has created his own wildly unique film, unhindered by creative restrictions, and yet the result remains unified by themes of corrupted love via either via the mundane erosions due to infidelity and sexual dissatisfaction or the more horrific and sudden cataclysms caused by death, murder, and mystical trickery.

Midnight shows are a chore but I think this is a must. Even the reviews that I have read that disliked this make me want to see it.

Guns N’ Roses Guitarist Slash’s First Horror Flick Picked Up By Anchor Bay | Geeks of Doom

Anchor Bay has acquired a movie titled Nothing to Fear, the first to be produced by Slasher Films, which was started by legendary Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash along with Rob Eric and Michael Williams.

The movie follows a family who makes that always dangerous horror movie decision to start fresh in a small town. This particular small town happens to be an actual town in Kansas called Stull. The town has about 20 residents and a decades old legend that one of the seven gateways to hell is located in its small cemetery, and that the Devil himself comes out to walk the Earth a couple of times a year there. Seeing as how it’s not likely you’ll bump into Satan hanging out in Kansas, it makes plenty of sense to bring the legend to life through film.

Anthony Leonardi III, a creature designer and storyboard artist on such titles as Constantine, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Rango, 47 Ronin, and The Lone Ranger, will make his feature directorial debut.

While this is the first movie set in and based directly on the legends of Stull, Kansas, it’s not the first time the town has been featured in entertainment. The direct-to-DVD action sequel Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal involved the hijacking of a plane with plans of crashing it into the Stull cemetery, effectively releasing the Devil, and the final confrontation between Michael and Lucifer at the end of season 5 of Supernatural takes place on the Stull cemetery grounds.

http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/28010Universal Flatlines With 'Thirteen'

Hitting theaters sometime in 2013 will be Thirteen, a new horror film from Universal, Strike Entertainment and Energy Entertainment.

Ostensibly it's supposed to be in the Flatliners mold, but I'm not sure how a found-footage possession film can really compare. We'll see soon enough though!

Per Variety, "Universal has pre-emptively bought 'Thirteen,' a spec by Benjamin Magid, and set it up with Uni-based Strike Entetrainment and Brooklyn Weaver at Energy Entertainment.

'Thirteen' centers on possession and is understood to utilize a mixture of found-footage point of views. The story is reminiscent of 1990's 'Flatliners', which starred Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland as medical school students experimenting with the line between life and death.

BD Horror News - Want A Horror Film From The Guy Who Wrote 'Apollo 18' And The Guy Behind "American Horror Story"? You're Getting One!

Brian Miller wrote Apollo 18. Ryan Murphy co-created "American Horror Story" and "Glee". Together? They're gonna bring you an as yet untitled sci-fi/horror flick.

Per Variety, "Apollo 18" scribe Brian Miller and Ryan Murphy, the co-creator of "American Horror Story" and "Glee," are set to pen an untitled sci-fi/horror movie for Sony Pictures. Murphy will produce with John Palermo ('Drive'), and story details remain under wraps.

Miller wrote the found footage sci-fi pic 'Apollo 18' for The Weinstein Company and is also writing an untitled sci-fi thriller for Paramount and producer Brad Weston."

This could be good! It could also be an unwieldily combo of boring and "whatever sticks to the wall" weirdness. Only time will tell!

BD Horror News - 'The Last Exorcism 2' Has A Director, Will Be Rated 'R', Starts Shooting Next Month!

Given the profitability of the original The Last Exorcism, which grossed $62.5 million worldwide on a budget of $1.6 million, a sequel was pretty much a foregone conclusion. We already knew that Damien Chazelle had been tapped to write the The Last Exorcism 2 and that Ashley Bell had once again agreed to star as Nell Sweetzer.

Now we know who's directing. That'll be Ed Gass-Donnelly (This Beautiful City, Small Town Murder Songs). And he'll begin shooting the Eli Roth produced sequel soon. Like, next month soon.

Per Deadline, "Production has been set to begin on the sequel to horror/thriller hit The Last Exorcism next month in New Orleans. Ed Gass-Donnelly will direct the R-rated follow-up to the 2010 PG-13 pic that grossed $70 million worldwide on a budget of $1.5 million. Star Ashley Bell is returning to reprise her role as Nell Sweetzer for the Damien Chazelle-penned film. As with the original, Eli Roth is producing via Arcade Pictures with Eric Newman, Marc Abraham and Tom Bliss producing via Strike Entertainment."

Interestingly enough, the article indicates that the producers are consciously aiming for an 'R' rating for this followup to the PG13 original. Producer Eric Newman, "The first film worked great as a PG-13 psychological film, but now we want to go R-rated and show the true horror of what this subject matter offers. The biggest creative challenge will be coming up with the right title!"

He's right about the last bit. Is it too late to go the prequel route and call this film The 2nd To Last Exorcism? Whatever it's called, delivery of the film is expected in late 2012, which I suppose means we're looking at a January 2013 release date.

BD Horror News - Vera Farmiga And Patrick Wilson In Talks To Do Some 'Conjuring' For James Wan

James Wan (Insidious) has begun courting actors for his upcoming New Line film, The Conjuring. Patrick Wilson (Young Adult, Watchmen and Insidious) and Vera Farmiga (The Departed, Orphan) are both said to be eyeing roles.

Per Variety, "James Wan and New Line have selected Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson to star in the horror pic 'The Conjuring.' The two thesps are in final negotiations to star and Wan is on board to direct. Chad and Carey Hayes sold the original pitch."

The project is inspired by the true-life story of the Perron family, who claimed they "lived among the dead" in the 1970s as spirits both friendly and sinister inhabited their Rhode Island farmhouse.

The film, "inspired by the supernatural events that happened in the Rhode Island home of the Perron family," would have the director returning to the realm of domestic haunts. Originally on Summit's radar, New Line stepped in and bought the pitch when talks fell through.

Quint thinks V/H/S, a found footage horror anthology, is the first great horror flick to screen at Sundance 2012!
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/52888

I kept hearing buzz on this and the whole time I never realized this is the first 'found-footage' anthology flick. Sounds pretty damned clever actually. Read the article if you want breakdowns on the individual stories and wrap-around, me, I'm sold and really looking forward to this.

So, the breakdown goes like this: some hooligans who like to go around video taping themselves breaking **** and grabbing tit-shots to sell for $50 a pop are hired to steal a cache of VHS tapes from an old man’s house. They don’t know what’s on these tapes, but they break in and find the old man dead in front of a bank of TVs.

They search the house and one by one find tapes and watch them. That’s the wraparound with the individual segments being the content of these tapes.

Now, these aren’t snuff films. Trust me, I wouldn’t be writing a glowing review of this movie if the movie went all Murder Set Pieces on us. In tone it reminded me much more of the Tales From The Darkside Movie, which is a big compliment because I love that flick.

There are five stories, each written and directed by different up and coming indie genre directors with the wraparound directed by Your Next and A Horrible Way To Die’s Adam Wingard...

...With some minor nips and tucks here and there (particularly at the very beginning where we get what feels like a 5 minute sequence of the hooligans breaking windows and smashing walls in an abandoned complex), this becomes an easy genre classic. What these filmmakers remembered was that horror needs an element of fun. Not stupid fun, but real energy and excitement.

V/H/S certainly has all that. Plus gratuitous nudity, crazy gore and some incredibly inventive tweaks to a subgenre that’s trying its damndest to wear out its welcome.

Quint has seen Don Coscarelli's John Dies At The End! Sundance 2012!
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/52928

John Dies At The End was one of my most anticipated movies of the festival. I loved the book by David Wong and I’ve been a fan of Don Coscarelli’s since I saw Phantasm II on cable as a youngster. If you’ve seen Coscarelli’s Bubba Ho-tep and know anything about the book you’d realize the director is a perfect match for the material.

The short description is this is a story about a substance called Soy Sauce, a very scarce drug that opens your mind to the point that you can see things only the most perceptive could catch out of the corner of their eye, know things you have no business knowing (how many grains of rice are on a plate in a Chinese restaurant, where that rice was grown, the nickname of the farmer who harvested it, for example). Sounds rad, right? The problem is you can’t choose to take this drug, the drug has to choose you and in this film we see the drug choose two quasi-loser best friends Dave and John played by newcomers Chase Williamson and Rob Mayes...

...I think with a few tweaks in the second half and maybe a little bit more money thrown into the digital effects you end up with a near flawless genre picture, an instant cult classic. It’s a unique film, mixing weird drug imagery with bizarre supernatural imagery all wrapped up in a comedic tone.

Very excited to see who picks this one up!

Very much looking forward to this. The book is a lot of fun, recommended.

Slipknot Member, Sons of Anarchy's Chief Join Darren Bousman's The Devil's Carnival
http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/new...hief-join-darren-bousmans-the-devils-carnival

Some more developments on The Devil's Carnival, that new project Darren Lynn Bousman is directing that is being seen as a companion piece of sorts to Repo! The Genetic Opera. Shooting has wrapped on the project and we've got two pieces of casting news to share.

Bousman announced on Facebook today M. Shawn Crahan of Slipknot will appear in the film as "The Tamer." He included a piece of art with this update. You will find that teaser poster inside with some casting info Shock exclusively learned.

In addition to Crahan, we have discovered Dayton Callie is also in the film. This veteran actor has been seen in Deadwood, Rob Zombie's Halloween II and, most recently, Sons of Anarchy, in which he plays Chief Unser.

Cast members previously revealed include: Terrance Zdunich (co-creator of The Devil's Carnival), Alexa Vega, Ogre, Paul Sorvino, Bill Moseley, Emilie Autumn, Marc Senter and Sean Patrick Flanery. And there are plenty of other top secret names involved

This has soooo much potential.

BD Horror News - Ivan Moody Hops Onto 'The Devil's Carnival' As "The Hobo Clown"!

More coolness.

Darren Lynn Bousman's The Devil's Carnival just wrapped shooting last week. Fans on the official site's forums already know that the cast now consists of Repo! The Genetic Opera co-creator Terrance Zdunich, as well as Repo! stars Alexa Vega, Ogre (from Skinny Puppy) and Paul Sorvino. Emilie Autumn, Sean Patrick Flanery, Bill Moseley, Briana Evigan, and Marc Senter have all joined the cast as well.

A few days ago we brought you the update that Slipknot's "The Clown" had been brought in as a character called "The Tamer". Now, we can report that Five Finger Death Punch singer Ivan Moody plays "The Hobo Clown" in the film.

So What's The Big Genre Film Everyone's Talking About At Sundance This Year?
Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.

This year, we have another movie that could be getting some buzz coming out of the festival.- V/H/S, reviewed by Quint here. Drew McWeeny at HitFix called it "one of the scariest movies I've seen in recent memory," and Drew knows his horror films. I can't wait to see it myself - I'm not too keen on "found footage" horror but everything, when done right, has the potential to be amazing and V/H/S follows a long tradition of horror anthologies with 21st century technology, and the result is... well, one of the moviegoers in last night's screening fainted during the film's first horrific sequence. He later got to meet the directors of the anthology - Ti West, David Bruckner, Adam Wingard, Glenn McQuaid, Joe Swanberg, and Radio Silence, who have to be ecstatic at the reaction from audiences so far. I hope V/H/S plays SXSW, because I'm really anxious to see it. I love hearing about films like this that come out of nowhere and deliver a solid asskicking. I especially love to be proven wrong about a type of movie like a found footage film, which I've been critical of in the past but I'm always open to new movie experiences and I'll happily eat crow if that's the case here.

Review: Terrifying anthology V/H/S creates new ghost stories for the video age - HitFix.com

I think the greatest thing a horror film can do to an audience is induce a feeling of dread. Anyone can scare you by having something pop out at the screen, but being able to take the audience, clue them in to what's coming, and then hold them to the fire, twisting and terrified… that's a skill set. That's real horror. This movie is loaded with unnerving imagery, simple and direct scares that play on a primal nightmare level, and ideas that blindside you with the way they twist expectation.

The film is also ordered in what I think is the exact right order. The first segment by David Bruckner sets the tone for just how crazy things might get, and the final segment by Radio Silence feels like the brakes are off and you're flying off the mountain into the void. It's crazy, and the audience tonight was screaming, jumping, viscerally reacting. This is the sort of film that's going to creep into the permanent nightmare vocabulary of the audience, and I think the cheap, ****ty VHS look of everything is a big part of why. We have learned over the past 20 years that if you're watching something on film, it's not real. But if you're watching something on video, especially low-grade unpolished video, that's "real." And the filmmakers play off of that idea with such glee that I almost feel like I got mugged by an entire gang. It is a film designed to shake you with abandon.

And there is no doubt… I am shaken. Well-played.

Distributors, start your engines. Someone's getting rich.

Oh hells bells I want to see this.

Dead, The (Blu-ray / DVD) | Horror Movie, DVD, & Book Reviews, News, Interviews at Dread Central

The film is a slow burn tale with such minimal dialogue that some may have pacing issues with it, but given the nightmarish quality of everything on display, there really isn't too much to complain about. My only real gripe is that I would have liked to have seen a much rowdier ending than what we got, but hey, that, too, is easily forgiven. As is, The Dead (along with The Horde) is one of the best damned zombie movies I've seen in a long time.

Sundance 2012: V/H/S Acquired by Magnolia Pictures | Horror Movie, DVD, & Book Reviews, News, Interviews at Dread Central

Despite reports of the film causing moviegoers to pass out - or perhaps because of them - Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to the Bloody Disgusting Selects Sundance Midnight entry V/H/S for low seven figures. Plans are for a theatrical release in the fall and then VOD.

V/H/S (2012) | Horror Movie, DVD, & Book Reviews, News, Interviews at Dread Central

There is little bad that can be said about V/H/S, although some may not appreciate the order of the series of events. Some will no doubt feel that the wrap-around is a bit misplaced. Personally I was a bit shaken up by the order, as nothing happens the way you would expect it to. To me that's a very good thing, and it serves to keep viewers on their toes.

After the Q&A with the directors we learned it was changed up a time or two, still allowing for five shorts for the audience to enjoy. This possible “misalignment” does not take anything visually away from the film, but it could cause some slight confusion. Of special mention are the effects, which were outstanding and all practical, making it fell all the more real.

Some may say that shaky cam is used only by those that can’t afford to make a real film or those that have no imagination. In this case I will certainly have to disagree as this is by far one of the best of its kind in recent memory. See this as soon as you can, and treat yourself to a great piece of work from the gleefully twisted minds of the many talented directors utilized here. Then hope all of them send more fright fests like this our way soon.

Hey Magnolia...sooner is bester!!!!!

BD Horror News - 'Thale' Tells The Tale Of A Tail In New Trailer!

A few weeks ago we brought you news of a Norwegian horror film is arriving later in 2012 that will tell the tale of the "huldra". Aleksander Nordaas' Thale follows a creepy chick with a cow's tale that appears normal from the front, but will appear "hollowed out" from behind (like a tree trunk).

Here's what Wiki says about the lore: "In some traditions, the huldra lures men into the forest to have sexual intercourse with her, rewarding those who satisfy her and often killing those who do not. The Norwegian huldra is a lot less bloodthirsty and may simply kidnap a man or lure him into the underworld. She sometimes steals human infants and replaces them with her own ugly huldrebarn (changeling huldre children). In some cases, the intercourse resulted in a child, being presented to the unknowing father. In some cases, she forces him to marry her."
