The restraint shown here, the patient partitioning of things that go bump in the night, is what sets "Willow Creek" apart, if only for the moment. It's a canny horror film and a derivative one, but as a reminder of the power of suggestion, the unseen dwarfing even the grandest budgets, prodding our imagination into provocatively chilling us to the bones, the film deserves an easy recommendation. It’s ultimately nothing new, but there is a very fine line between indulging in the standard structures of particular genre and hitting them out of the park, or simply serving uninspired scares. And for the most part, “Deliver Us From Evil” lies in the latter direction. And it’s a shame because in Bana and Ramirez, who share a palpable bro-mantic, odd-couple quality, the film finds its most charismatic element... but shoves it aside to deliver a movie that will dully meet the barest of expectations instead of trying to exceed them. And that’s truly scary stuff. [C-]
It is a mix of horror and comedy that does not take off right away but builds momentum to a satisfying conclusion. I like to think that because Wolfcop is a low-budget production it meant that Dean had to put some of his crazier ideas on the shelf. Now that a sequel has been approved hopefully Dean can be more ambitious with his next screenplay; open up that can of crazy as he explores more werewolf tropes to fiddle with. There is room to really let his werewolf's hair out, and that is promising.
One other thing. You will never listen to Gowan's Moonlight Desires the same way ever again. I swear on it.
A totally engrossing freak-out, Deliver Us From Evil may not make you believe in demons, but it will convince you that talented filmmakers can create a world in which such spirit creatures exist and exert a powerful influence upon unfortunate souls.
Deliver Us is a hard one to pin down. Got a lot of good vibes from test audiences with the studio thinking they might have a cheap hit...but even the good reviews aren't real positive. Will let you know how it was either tomorrow or Saturday.
So basically, it's better than nothing?![]()
