Toronto Film Review: ‘The Belko Experiment’

Eighty foreign workers have the worst day at the office ever in this giddy, gory thriller.

In the tradition of “Battle Royale” and “You’re Next,” “The Belko Experiment” offers the cheerfully mean-spirited spectacle of numerous trapped people killing each other lest they be killed. This elaborate employee elimination process in a Colombian corporate high-rise represents director Greg McLean’s best work since his debut feature “Wolf Creek,” as well as a long-aborning pet project for scenarist/producer James Gunn (“Guardians of the Galaxy”). It should delight bloodthirstier genre fans in various formats and markets, with Orion Releasing and BH Tilt partnering up to claim U.S. theatrical rights the day after pic’s Toronto midnight premiere. They plan to open on a thousand U.S. screens next March.

Ok, seems every festival has at least one movie that sends someone calling for an ambulance. I call shenanigans, but I looked up some more reviews of this movie and they are pretty strong across the board. Not looking forward to the animal violence that is bound to be in this one...but it certainly is on my radar.

I haven't seen the afromentioned Pit, but I remember seeing this around.

‘The Autopsy of Jane Doe’ Trailer Teases the Night of the Spooky Corpse

IFC Midnight has unveiled the first trailer for the upcoming horror film The Autopsy of Jane Doe. The film hails from Troll Hunter director Andr? ?vredal and stars Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch as a father/son duo who run their family-owned morgue in Virginia. One night, an unknown female corpse is brought in after being found in the basement of a home where a multiple homicide took place. However, as the two begin their autopsy, strange goings-on take place, and they soon begin to question how dead this woman really is.

The trailer promises a contained thriller with plenty of spooky imagery and jump scares. Cox and Hirsch are two talented performers, so the potential is there for a solid horror film. Reviews out of the film’s Toronto International Film Festival debut a few weeks ago were something of a mixed bag, but audiences will get the chance to judge for themselves soon enough.

’31’ Review: Rob Zombie’s Posse of Insane Clowns

Even for those who enjoy Zombie’s guilty pleasure neo-exploitation flicks, ’31’ is one of his weaker efforts. The flick might look good, but it was definitely produced on crowd-funding and a prayer. More than that, the project was designed as a chance for the filmmaker to blow off some steam and have a good time after the more heady intentions of his last effort. This is a B-side by a B-moviemaker and expectations should be adjusted accordingly. It’s good greasy fun to kick off Halloween season for those who care. Everyone else is better off not even knowing about it. It’s just easier that way.
