All Things: San Diego Comic-Con

Brutal...

http://sdccblog.com/2015/02/san-die...duce-available-parking-in-downtown-san-diego/

It's "only" 500 spots, but that's still a pretty big strain on travelers. The structure on K street is pretty good if you can get there early. It's about $25 for the day. Obviously, pre-sale passes are best...but after the mess last year, who knows how that's going to go.

There are alternatives. Parking at a hotel/self parking lot near the bus routes, but yeah...500 spots is exponentially large all things considered.

James Gunn Says Marvel Won’t Attend Comic-Con 2015
http://collider.com/marvel-comic-con-2015-absent/

However, the studio may be absent from Comic-Con 2015. In a Facebook Q&A with James Gunn [via JoBlo], the director was asked if he would be attending this year, and he replied, “I’m not sure. Marvel isn’t going so I’m not sure I will either.” When pressed on whether or not he was misleading people, Gunn responded on Twitter:

“@starglooms: @JamesGunn @DrunkenShots guys, he could be lying” I have never lied about anything to the fans, ever.

— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) March 7, 2015

Marvel leaving Comic-Con would mark the end of an era, but it’s not an unexpected conclusion. Marvel no longer needs Comic-Con. We got a glimpse of that last year when fans—some of whom had waited in line for over a day just for the Marvel panel—were denied a second viewing of the first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron. I’ve been in that room in the past, and the studio didn’t shy away from showing their big trailers more than once. I also heard that they also wanted to end the presentation by announcing Joaquin Phoenix for Doctor Strange, but they couldn’t get the contract done in time, so the panel ended with a whimper.

The studio’s departure marks an ongoing transformation for Comic-Con. Once studios realized that a big showing at Comic-Con doesn’t translate to massive box office, they started to back away. Disney has pretty much left entirely since they have their own convention, D23 (since Disney owns Marvel, that’s where the superhero studio might make a presentation), and other studios are skittish about what they’ll bring. The return on investment for movies is imperceptible, but the Con now has value as a showplace for television. That’s where Comic-Con has been going for years, and as the Golden Age of Television continues to prosper, shows like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones will keep packing the convention. It’s possible that Gunn was only referring to Marvel movies, and the studio will show up to push their upcoming Netflix titles and possibly the return of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. if the show gets renewed.

Here is a little more. Honestly...after last year's limp finale'...I'm ok with that. Marvel has been coasting on the same, 'Let's just introduce everyone, have them vamp, and then hold hands and get an ovation for doing nothing'. There is sooooo much other stuff that can be used to fill the time. And Marvel may think they don't need Comicon...and they don't, but there will be blowback. And sorry SmytheKing, but Disney....errrrrrrrrr Marvel staying home means that Disney...errrrrrrr Star Wars will probably be held for their all in D3 Con. Transition year for SDCC...Sunday should be interesting. With Sons gone...what does Comicon have besides the inevitable Supernatural panel. Better call Saul maybe? Breaking Bad had nice days the years they showed up.

Yeah the only thing I'm holding on for is that J.J. said he'd like to be there if they have something. It might not be earth-shattering or anything, but I'm still hoping that there will be a presence.

Worst case? I get sleep on Friday and/or Saturday night. :)

More on SDCC Parking.

http://sdccblog.com/2015/03/parking-for-san-diego-comic-con-moving-to-a-lottery-based-system/

Ace Parking announced today that this year, parking lot assignments will be done differently than in the past. Although in 2014 Ace revamped their website to try to meet up with increased demand for parking, the system was met with some glitches, possibly due to a DDoS attack, or simply because they weren’t expecting the sheer number of attendees who all wanted parking at once.

This year, according to Ace to “provide the best experience possible and take the pain and pressure out of the process”, they’re moving to a lottery based system.

Honestly, I'm betting that within the next five years you'll see SDCC packages offered that include a badge, hotel room, and parking. I'm not sure if they'd offer the downtown ones, but Hotel Circle area for sure. You'll buy in advance for say $1k and then you'll have everything finished.

Yeah. That makes too much sense. So NO it won't happen. Add to the fact that a LOT of folks don't need all three. If you have a hotel, you usually have the shuttle and the hotels make up whatever discounts they give as far as hotel rates (based on the freezes that have been suggested) by incidentals such as parking. I think SDCC as an organization has pretty much been of the mindset that less government is better government, so that's another reason I don't see them bundling like that. The thing I don't understand...haven't they been doing it as a lottery? Or has parking...seperate from admission, been a first come first served system prior to this? Telling you...there are soooooooo many other parking options besides the close lots. You can usually park at a hotel for the day, and shuttle. Or, you can park at one of the many dedicated all day parking lots NEAR the hotels (outside of downtown), walk over to the nearest hotel...and then shuttle.

No it's been a first come thing with ACE. I tried last year and BOY did they mess up. Servers crashed immediately. They tweeted out that they'd be trying again in a couple of hours. Couldn't get them back online by that time, didn't say a thing until 30-45 minutes after the time they said they'd be back on sale, that response said they would be on sale tomorrow, then they quietly made them for sale later on that evening without telling anyone. They sold out and none were available the next day. Met with a "sorry".

There really are a lot of options (and if you get there early enough they can be cheap), but it's the madness that people would like to avoid if they could I guess.
