All Things: San Diego Comic-Con

ok, the Godzilla encounter was the equivalent of a West Hollywood artist loft. The pics in that post a few up are better than the actual experience. NERD HQ is BETTER than Hall H. $22 for great...very very intimate panels. Got to be close enough to scare Seth Robot Chicken Green and Zac CHUCK Levi. Really passionate guys who appreciate their fans sincerely. Just a great experience. Oh...and no long ass waits to get shut out. Got to hang with my boy SmytheKing, just a terrific day. And tommorow, another NerdHq panel, Robot Chicken, Bobs Burgers, AND ARCHER!!!!!!!!! Oh...The Wilfred panel with an unaired, really ****ed up episode was fun too.

Don't forget about the panel on Europa. Almost worth the price of admission to hall h just on that alone.

Well that wraps up SDCC for me. I got everything I needed, my hotel room looks like a nerd tornado hit LOL

BEST PART OF MY DAY WAS I MET TOMMY, the Green/White power ranger!!!!!!! And I got the 24Karat Gold Legacy Morpher!!:D!!

So tired...had a blast, wish this was yearlong lol see ya next year SD

Just announced the sequel to Man of Steel will have Batman!! Hells yes this sounds good

So...Saturday. Godzilla, the Marvel panel...a full day of great programming in Hall H. So. What to do? Well, I got up at 1:30 am...showered, and out the door by 2:15. Shuttles run all night...so here comes the bus. Doors open...and Party Rock is BLARING. Huge, Six Million Dollar Man Sasquatch looking dude says..."I hope you brought the bath salts". So I grab a seat and hang on. Bus driver proceeds to drive off course delivering folks to hotels that aren't on his route. He makes wicked u-turns in the middle of empty streets, and makes the bus DANCE by stomping the breaks at the lights. That was the start of my adventure. Got down to dreaded Hall H and knew I would get in. SO much great programming. Saw Godzilla footage(SQUEEEEEE), Chris Hardwicke literally getting nerdgasm from Tom Cruise, the announcement of Man of Steel 2:Now with more BATMAN. And the Marvel Panel, which had a great moment with Loki, some nice Cap'n stuff...and footage from Guardians of the Galaxy. Folks, this is gonna be EPIC. EPIC!!!!!!!!. Cap it off with the always terrific Kevin Smith and my boy SmytheKing getting my Deadpool Taco Truck exclusive. Just a fine way to end a all around perfect Con. Floor time for pictures, last minute deal gathering and Sons of Anarchy for the perfect epilogue to seal the deal tomorrow.

I was going to let jd break it, but yeah. Nerd boner. Sounds like a possible dark knight returns adaptation but not quite. Snyder said they're just getting started and it won't be a direct port.

I'm still erect.

They then rolled some footage from the film, which they prefaced by saying they?ve only been filming for 10-13 days. The result, though, was a fantastic reel of much more footage than expected. The entire thing was 100% James Gunn, as there?s a strong undercurrent of irreverent humor throughout; the footage was backed by ?Hooked on a Feeling,? if you need further proof. Pratt?s Star-Lord is a mix between a Wild West badass and a juvenile delinquent. We saw the entire Guardians gang?including Groot and Rocket Raccoon?being rounded up in a space prison, as they were ?checked in? by John C. Reilly?s character. Again, there was a great sense of humor to the proceedings, as Groot stepped in and Reilly said, ?What is that thing?? Pratt?s Star-Lord was giving Reilly and his cohorts the middle finger while being scanned.

We saw a few flashes of action, but the big takeaway is that Guardians is wholly a James Gunn film. It?s weird, there are a lot of great creatures (the makeup on Bautista and Saldana was impressive), and it?s really funny. The footage ended with Reilly?s character finishing the check-in and then quipping to his colleague, ?What a bunch of a-holes.?

Closing thoughts:

Given that we didn?t even know there was going to be a Guardians panel, this was a solid surprise. The cast is unexpected and charismatic, and I really love what we saw of Pratt?s Star-Lord. Moreover, it?s reassuring to see that Gunn hasn?t toned down his sensibilities for the Marvel film. Guardians of the Galaxy opens on August 1, 2014.

The fairly short reel of footage focused mostly on the humans, as we were treated to shots of the post-apocalyptic society while Gary Oldman?s character made a sort of rallying speech. The footage gave me a strong The Road vibe, as the human society has devolved into chaos. There?s a great deal of intensity brewing, and we saw some fleeting images of Oldman firing a gun, structures overrun with grass, and Clarke?s character hiding behind a wall. Oldman mentioned in his speech that the humans spent four years fighting the virus and another four years fighting each other, and it has clearly taken its toll on the society.

The final shot of the footage opened close on the eyes of a fully-rendered Caesar sporting a bit of white war paint on his face and chest, and it slowly pulled back to reveal Caesar flanked by a number of other apes, with Caesar holding a staff in his hand and signaling for the other apes to hold. His face is intense, and as he drops his hand to signal a ?charge,? the footage cut to black and revealed the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes logo.

Closing thoughts:

The panel wasn?t opened up to audience Q&A, but the footage that Reeves showed was really strong. Whereas Rise of the Planet of the Apes had a fairly light color palette, Dawn is much darker. Reeves seems to have done a great deal of world building for the Dawn universe, and I love the grounded portrayal of the new civilizations. I?m also interested to see ?a story of two communities,? as it definitely sounds like we?ll be delving deeper into the psyche of Caesar and how his ape civilization progresses towards the inevitable outcome..

THIS looked SOOOOOOOOO good!
