All Things:Science Fiction/Fantasy

I started re-reading (re-re-re-re, really) Ender's Game in advance of November 1.

I think that was a bad choice, because honestly have no idea how the movie could possibly do it justice. How will they portray his relationship with his siblings (Val in particular)? Will they include Demosthenes and Locke (the only point to that would be to continue the series)? What about Bean? And how about the mind game (The Giant's Drink)?

UGH!!!!

I don't know, Orph. I'd definitely recommend reading it...but you may wanna wait until after the movie.

i came here once i saw you posted, and i figured it'd probably be about Ender's Game. i too thought about cracking it open again, but it's been long enough since i last read it, where it'd be best for me to wait until after i see the movie... a movie i've wanted for a long time for very personal reasons. i know i'm going to be disappointed some, but i'm trying to be more accepting of things these days.

i never purchased the definitive 1991 edition, so i think i'll pick that one up as soon as i see the movie.

[TV] Did 'Pacific Rim' Inspire Syfy's "Creature At Bay"? -

Syfy has teamed up with X-Men director Bryan Singer and his Bad Hat Harry Prods. (“House”) for “Creature At Bay,” a drama series project, which will be developed as a 90-minute pilot script, Deadline writes.

It will be written by John Cabrera, co-creator of Warner Bros.’ award winning sci-fi digital series “H+,” also produced by Bryan Singer.

“‘Creature At Bay is set in the wake of the US military taking down a giant, rampant creature — a modern-day “Kaiju” monster – just off the Northern California coast. A middle-management Undersecretary from the California Emergency Management Agency is charged with leading the clean-up efforts as the small town becomes the focus of the entire world.”

The book is very onion-like...layer upon layer upon layer of meaning. A 2:15 movie can't possibly pack it all in (not even A Ridley Scott film). I need to make sure my expectations are set appropriately before I go see it, because I very badly want this to be something great.

PG-13 rating, I see. Wonder if that'll cut into some of the trash-talking the Battle School students do?

Meh...they could cast anyone in WoW and it'll only be seen by fanboys. In fact, what they SHOULD do is cast a couple of long-dead stars in the roles of the undead.

Ugh I'm in the process of re-reading it too. Bonzo, Alai, Petra....how the hell can it be done justice?

I fear they'll skip Locke and Demosthenes altogether and just show flashbacks to ender's earlier life with clips of his siblings very high level.

The battle school relationships will be easy, since they'll all be there from beginning to the final "game." Stilson on Earth and Bonzo Madrid in Battle School will be somewhat developed (Bonzo more than Stilson) because they're both essential characters to Ender's development. Petra is highly cast in the movie, Alai not so much (but you couldn't leave him...Ender's first friend in Battle School...out). Bean is essentially Ender's equal (in the eyes of the IF), and his backup should Ender fail to do what was necessary, but you don't find that out until diving into e Shadow series.

But the Giant's Drink? Important to the rest of the quartet of books, but not to the movie...unless they plan to continue the Ender franchise. Doubt that, as the rest of the books are so very cerebral rather than action-y.
