HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS Director Zhang Yimou to Helm GREAT WALL | Collider

Legendary Pictures is putting The Great Wall back together. The project initially came very close to production with Ed Zwick (The Last Samurai) directing and Henry Cavill and Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) in the lead roles, but scheduling issues and creative differences brought the film to a halt. The central conceit—which was hatched by Legendary CEO Thomas Tull and World War Z author Max Brooks—explores the mystery behind why The Great Wall was constructed in China. In Zwick’s iteration, supernatural forces played a role as the wall was built not to keep anyone in, but to keep terrifying creatures out.

Though it was over a year ago that Zwick dropped out, Legendary is going to try to get The Great Wall moving again with Hero director Zhang Yimou. Hit the jump for more.

Per Heat Vision, Chinese director Zhang Yimou is in talks to take the helm of The Great Wall with the script getting a revamp. The basic concept will remain, but it’s unclear if the supernatural twist will carry over into Yimou’s iteration.

Replacing Zwick with Yimou is a nice move, but I really hope they keep the supernatural elements in.

The book this was based on was SO FREAKIN GOOD, that I'm almost afraid to see this movie because I don't want it to suck which it very well may as it has Tom Cruise in it.

The wild card is Liman. Capable of making a great movie...but has never done something like this before. I take great optimism in the buzz this had last year @ SDCC, even with the notoriously wooden Cruise, there was a nice energy. So far...no advance word, and I have to look at the release date to get a better idea of what the studio is expecting...Edge of Tomorrow Movie Release Date | Release Date, ok...June 6th, with international release dates starting in May. Not a deep summer release, kind of an early one. But...studio is content to have international word of mouth float in before it opens stateside. You can take that as a positive(they believe in it) or a negative(they want to make their money internationally, where I have to imagine Cruise is a big draw, and they don't care about domestic numbers ). #crossesfingers .

Gonna have to check out the source material...it's a manga isn't it?
