All Things:Science Fiction/Fantasy

Even my wife and daughters who are huge Taylor Kitsch (sp?) fans aren't going to see it.

Wonder how the heck "Battleship" is going to do! That looks almost as big of a train wreck as Carter.

BD Horror News - FX Guru To Make Directorial Debut On 'Archetype'

John Davis, riding high off of the surprise success of the super-powered found-footage movie Chronicle, is going back to the world of robots as the producer. THR reports that David, who has a first-look deal at Fox, has picked up the rights to Archetype, a sci-fi short (watch it after the break) directed by Aaron Sims, with plans on developing it into a feature. We first reported on this short film here on Bloody last June.

Sims runs the Aaron Sims Co., a firm that specializes in previs and visual effects with credits including War Horse, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Thing remake. He acted as a concept artist and did creature design work for Stan Winston Studio, working on A.I. and War of the Worlds, among other movies. He began his career with Rick Baker, working in special effects and make-up on movies such as Gremlins 2, Batman Forever and Mighty Joe Young.

"'The Archetype' short tells the story of an eight-foot tall combat robot named RL7 that malfunctions during a mission, developing unexplained memories, causing its creators to investigate its odd behavior. The short ends with concept paintings detailing the robot on the run while being chased by various metallic constructs."

Sims is attached to make his feature directorial debut on the feature. Newcomers Guy Busick and Ryan Murphy are attached to pen the script. John Norris, an exec producer on The Help, will produce with Davis.

Director Andrew Stanton JOHN CARTER Interview

Ninety-five years ago, Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote A Princess of Mars, and since its publication, the series has influenced generations of readers. As you might imagine, numerous filmmakers were inspired by Burroughs imagination, and many tried and were unsuccessful in bringing the story to the big screen. Enter Andrew Stanton. As the writer-director of Pixar’s Finding Nemo and WALL-E, Stanton has proven himself to be a great director. He’s also a big fan of A Princess of Mars, and when he made the move to live-action, he got Disney to bring the film to theaters (now under the title of “John Carter“, named after the book’s protagonist). After you see it this weekend, you’ll be glad you did. The film is fantastic and well worth the price of an IMAX 3D ticket. Trust me: once you’re transported to the world of Barsoom, you’re going to love it.

A lot of good word of mouth from the critics so far. Me and Kq will be seeing this on Saturday...in Imax. I'll let you know.

How ‘John Carter’ Succeeds Where the ‘Star Wars’ Prequels Failed | Film School Rejects

Director Andrew Stanton, being somewhat of the miracle worker that he is, has managed to capture the strengths of the original Star Wars trilogy while avoiding much of what was wrong with the prequels with his John Carter. This Disney epic provides for all of a boy’s basic needs, wants, and desires that Lucas’s prequels didn’t deliver upon. Stanton knows their sweet spot – and yes, I know how creepy that reads – by hitting all the major checkpoints required for them: beefy hero, beautiful love interest, sweet weaponry, non-pandering comic relief, big aliens, and exciting flying things that could not look more like the speeder bikes from Return of the Jedi. How do these amazing devices work, you ask? They just do.

Producer Lindsey Collins JOHN CARTER and an R-Rated GALAXY QUEST Interview

And for those who are like me and cannot believe the original cut of Galaxy Quest was rated R, here’s exactly what Collins said:

“We had lunch with Sigourney [Weaver] who was telling us that there actually used to be an R-rated version of that movie which was awesome. It was the director’s cut and it was R-rated and everybody was swearing and there were sex scenes, and the whole thing. They didn’t know what to do with it, so they had to re-edit the whole thing and made it what it is today. We were like, ‘How do we get our hands on the R-rated version of Galaxy Quest?’ She said ‘I don’t know!’ and we were like, ‘Come on, Sigourney!’ ”

Again, I have to see this version of the movie.

Oh man...PLEASE release this and make a great movie even better.

JOHN CARTER Review

...John Carter is a visual effects extravaganza, but Stanton captivates us not only with ground-breaking effects, but by pulling everything together as a cohesive whole. It’s not enough to simply show John Carter zipping around on airships. The airship has to be part of a culture and the culture has to come alive through its representative characters. This is what good epic stories do. They take the time to set up the world and the characters, and only then does the action come alive, as opposed to one CGI thing fighting another CGI thing. And when the action in John Carter comes alive, it’s absolutely spectacular. The 3D doesn’t get in the way, provides a nice depth of field, and the world is so big that an IMAX screening would be worth your time. John Carter the kind of visual feast that only a movie theater can provide.

However, the film is like a Faberge egg. It’s beautiful and well-crafted, but it can shatter if you mishandle it for a second. As I mentioned earlier, John Carter is a balancing act and the film tumbles badly as it comes to the end. For over two hours, John Carter moves at the best pace to suit the story, but the ending moves in flash forward to the point where a series of big events become so condensed that they’re ludicrous. You can almost see the Disney executive off to the side tapping his watch, and saying “Time to wrap it up.”

It’s a jarring and unworthy finish to a vivid and memorable movie-going experience. John Carter is a swashbuckling tale (Carter even uses swords instead of guns) that measures up to and in some ways exceeds the vision of the source material, Edgar Rice Burroughs‘ 1917 novel, A Princess of Mars. Andrew Stanton has taken an old-fashioned adventure and given it a high-tech body. John Carter is visually stunning, thoughtfully constructed, and most importantly, the film is grand, goofy, old-fashioned fun.

Rating: B+

Ok...pony up folks. The reviews are coming in and they are all very positive. Who's going? I plan on seeing this first thing tomorrow(sorry Kingsqueen we may have to do the Imax). Can good reviews/word of mouth do what the advertising failed to do and make you want to see this? Yes Doc...I know. So, he's not gonna go, how about the rest of you?

I guess the screenplay was co-written by Michael Chabon?? If so, no wonder it's getting good reviews.

Not sure when I might see it, but I do hope to see it.

Just got back from seeing it in IMAX 3D. ****ing BRILLIANT!! I will see this again (taking my daughter)!

Great effects, great mechanical and character design, excellent screenplay adaptation, nearly seamless CG!

DO. NOT. WAIT. ANY. LONGER.

I was prepared for a stinker, too. SO GLAD IT WASN'T! It isn't 100% true to the book, but it's a damned good adaptation!

Oh...and the trailer for Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS gave me wood.

Does it take place in the Alien universe??? LOTS of familiar imagery from the initial Alien movie.

EDIT: looks like a prequel??

The only connection from what they are saying is Guy Pearce's character...

Ever notice how it's soooo clear to the reader of a sci fi flick review that the writer of said review is NOT a fan of sci of any kind? I mean...to the point of holding it in the utmost contempt? Seriously...these people pan EVERY sci fi flick (if it isn't from Pixar) and tv show, and probably literally soaked their panties while traveling home from the theater to write their glowing reviews of any of the Twilight series.

I kind of get a feeling that there's more than that...

Anyhow, the preview trailer looked ****ing GREAT! Even Jeannen said she wanted to see it!

BTW...any word of Alien coming out on BRD before I die??
