Hero Complex Film Festival Unmasks Nine Genre-Defining Favorites

John Carpenter, Chris Carter, Frank Darabont, Guillermo del Toro and Roland Emmerich

Set for Weekend Celebration of Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Horror

LOS ANGELES – April 8, 2013 – Los Angeles Times’ Hero Complex Film Festival will delve into its darker side in its fourth year with a frighteningly stellar line-up of fan favorites. The screenings and live Q&As with their creators will be hosted by The Times’ Hero Complex editor Gina McIntyre May 10-12 at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatres and will include:

Fri. May 10:

Iconic filmmaker John Carpenter will talk about his storied career between showings of “They Live” and “Halloween.”
Sat. May 11:

“The Mist” and a lively discussion with Frank Darabont on adapting Stephen King and exploring the human side of horror.
A double feature of “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Devil’s Backbone” between which director Guillermo del Toro will talk about the making of the films and what inspires him.
Sun. May 12:

The alien-invasion classic “Independence Day” and a conversation with director Roland Emmerich, who will also chat about his upcoming “White House Down.”
An “X-Files” extravaganza with creator Chris Carter talking about the production of his cultural touchstone, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. In a new twist, three uncut episodes of the fabled TV show will be featured: the original “Pilot,” “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose” and “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space.”
“We are gratified that the Hero Complex audience has grown by more than half a million unique readers from across the country this year alone,” said Jeff Dellinger, Hero Complex general manager. “This year’s line-up reflects the broader geek culture that Gina McIntyre and her team of contributors cover and will deliver a weekend of intense entertainment for both our newest family members and longstanding devotees.”

Tickets are available now for $20 and Los Angeles Times members receive a 50% discount. A limited number of special Festival Passes are also available for $50.

Presented in association with IFC Midnight, IMAX and TNT’s “Falling Skies,” the Festival is a signature event for The Times’ phenomenally popular, award-winning Hero Complex, which covers superheroic, sci-fi, fantasy and horror entertainment. Hero Complex’s influential presence can also be felt at the annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books (April 20-21), San Diego & New York Comic-Cons and WonderCon, and its IMAX Screening Series, which hosts upcoming genre releases throughout the year.

Barring Emmerich, that's a hell of a lineup.

Neill Blomkamp Talks HALO Movie, DISTRICT 10 and More | Collider

I really hope Elysium doesn't crap out. It's taken a LONG time. I thought this guy and Duncan Jones were the future of sci-fi and smart movies. Jones' Source Code was kinda meh, and now hes doing World of Warcraft, which...really???? So I hope at least Blomkamp can follow thru.

Yeah. I saw the footage last year at the CC panel and it looked solid. Definitely looking forward to it myself.

Dunno, hopeful...but that trailer looks more than a little derivative of District 9(settings/effects...not necessarily the story).

Oh for sure. The footage I saw gave it a lot more of an actiony chase feel though. Less drama and more fun than District 9. Also Sharlto Copley looks pretty cool in what I saw as well.

I do like the fact that he is suited up with an exoskeleton...AN EXOSKELETON!!!!! **** flying cars, this is the future I want!!!!!

Fox Is Cracking Down On Anyone Making And Selling Homemade Firefly Jayne Hats Browncoats Are NOT Happy

Apparently, fans who have been making and selling their versions of the Jayne hat for roughly the last 10 years are being sent “cease and desist” notices from Fox.

It seems Ripple Junction now has an official license to make the Jayne hat (the one sold through ThinkGeek) and that means independent Browncoats who might be making and selling them are now infringing on the license for a simple patterned hat.

Did anyone watch Defiance last night? I was pretty much disappointed. The potential was there (story and back story was interesting) but they blew it. Does ScyFy have a chance to stay on the air?? Will they ever get something to the standard of BSG again? Man it PO'ed me last night. It feels like sales of the video game is more important then anything. Thoughts?

I dvr'ed it but haven't watched it yet.

There are some interesting things. The big blue warriors are interesting and the main guy is ok but I knew how he was going to fit in all along (you will understand his role in Defiance - the city - by the end of the show) and his daughter. The rest - it was just not up to BSG standard. With the momentum from BSG how did ScyFy blow it so bad. There pretty much isn't anything on that channel I want to watch anymore ...

I didn't watch Defiance partially because I think that outside of BSG(which I still have not seen) everything associated with them has an air of...cheap. And the cynical part of me was having trouble justifying their attempts to shoehorn in a $50 video game.

From what i heard this will be their most expensive tv show to date. How much of that money is actually put into the show and not into things like advertising i have no clue. I am kinda a torn on the whole game thing. On the one hand good on them for thinking outside the box. On the other hand it seems like its just a cash grab.

Tom Cruise to Star in Sci-Fi Adaptation YUKIKAZE for Warner Bros. | Collider

Now Cruise has become attached to star in an adaptation of author Chōhei Kambayashi?s sci-fi novel series Yukikaze for Warner Bros. The book series takes place on an Earth ravaged by war, where a hyper-dimensional passageway opened up over Antarctica thirty years previously, setting into motion events that would find the human race uniting to fight off the mysterious alien force known as JAM.

Cruise would play a second lieutenant who is tasked with heading into enemy territory?the alien home planet Fairy?and gathering information that can bring an end to the war once and for all.

Omg...really...and Tom Cruise...really???? Really????

Meet The Glamorous Cast Of 'Snowpiercer'! -Bloody Disgusting

From The Host‘s Bong Joon-ho comes Snowpiercer, a heavily dystopian sci-fi film from Dimension that I’m getting super excited about. These character posters are ok, but it’s the concept that intrigues me the most.

The post-apocalyptic thriller stars Captain America‘s Chris Evans, as well as Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, John Hurt, Octavia Spencer, Alison Pill, Song Kang-ho, Ewen Bremner and Kenny Doughty.

The French graphic novel follows a group of people on a train without a final destination, struggling to survive after the end of the world brings on a cataclysmic ice age.

Absolutely horrid. We were really looking forward to it and taped it last night to watch this morning after the kidlette was off to school. We looked at each other after the 10 minute point, decided we'd watch the whole thing to see if it would "grow on us." Only took another five minutes before we couldn't stand any more.
