Review: Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes" is a daring and dazzling accomplishment

Walking in to "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes," I hoped Matt Reeves had made a solid and respectful follow-up, one that expanded on "Rise" in interesting ways. That's all I wanted from it. What I got instead is a film that digs deep, that challenges not only the notion of what a studio blockbuster looks like but also how sequels are supposed to work in a commercial world, a movie about real ideas with a spectacular sense of character and mood. "Dawn" is not just a good genre movie or a good summer movie. It's a great science-fiction film, full-stop, and one of the year's very best movies so far.

Specialty Box Office: 'Begin Again' Begins On High Note; 'America,' 'Snowpiercer,' 'YSL' Solid - Deadline.com

TWC’s brethren label RADiUS bowed Bong Joon-ho‘s sci-fi drama Snowpiercer with 8 runs this weekend following a sold out pre-launch event in Austin in addition to screenings at Brooklyn’s BAMcinemaFest with Jong in attendance, followed the next day in Manhattan at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. The film starring Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris, John Hurt and Jamie Bell grossed over $162K, averaging over $20K. The take includes $4,490 from a midweek event with Alamo Drafthouse in Austin in which audiences took a train ride (tying in with the film’s plot) outside the capital along with a screening. “There’s no stopping this train,” said RADiUS’ co-president Tom Quinn on Sunday. “With some of the best reviews of the year and incredibly strong word-of-mouth, we’re looking forward to a robust holiday expansion.”

I wouldn't put Snowpiercer heads and shoulders above the best fare of the year, necessarily, but I liked it.

Review: SNOWPIERCER, A Singular And Breathtaking Cinematic Experience | Twitch

Following the disappointment of Kim Jee-woon's The Last Stand and the lukewarm reception of Park Chan-wook's meticulous chamber piece Stoker, Bong Joon-ho has created with Snowpiercer the most accomplished overseas work of any Korean filmmaker to-date. While it remains to be seen whether or not mainstream western audiences will embrace Bong's dark and ferocious genre film, in many ways he's already beaten Hollywood at its own game. A tour de force of science fiction, Snowpiercer is a singular and breathtaking cinematic experience.

Definitely seeing this weekend.

Saw Snowpiercer last night, it's a really cool and memorable flick with a Korean movie vibe to it with its twists and turns which is quite awesome. It feels increasingly surreal as the movie goes on which might put some people off but they weren't afraid to have little fun with it. I didn't like the final minutes of the movie at all but the buildup to the ending was solid.

So I didn't quite love it but I really liked it. Check it out.

Book Review: 'Firestorm' Bridges Gap Between Between 'Rise' & 'Dawn Of The Planet Of Apes' With Thrills & Dread|The Playlist

'Dawn' picks up a decade since the events in 'Rise,' with the apes now firmly in control, providing a new backdrop for the primate driven blockbuster. But what happened narratively in between the two films?

Well, that space between the films is where Fox has been exercising the kind of clever muscles that I wish studios would flex more often. They've already issued three short films that show human survival in the wake of the Simian Flu that was spreading rapidly across the globe at the end of 'Rise.' And now they've filled in much more with "Firestorm" by Greg Keyes, which not only utilizes the somewhat antiquated but still standard movie novelization format, but allows it function not just as a retelling of the film, but as a substantive add on to the experience. Sure, you don't have to read the book to enjoy the film (or vice versa), but for those looking to get a bit more out of the blockbuster before they see it, or afterward, "Firestorm" exceeds expectations handily.

I like this idea.

Oh, and I saw Snowpiercer over the weekend and very much enjoyed it. Maybe not quite as much as I'd hoped, but I thought it was very good.

I just received the Snowpiercer graphic novel yesterday. I'll probably read it within the next couple of weeks.
