OK THIS IS SPOILER CONVERSATION FOR THOSE WATCHING BLACK SAILS...
I need a judgement here. I got caught up to Black Sails...at least to episode 6, but I got derailed. I should have seen it coming. They hinted at it enough...but yet, when they revealed the extent of pre-Flint's 'relationship' with the Hamiltons I found myself, and still do, more than shocked and disturbed. Flint has done horrible things...murdering Gates in particular, yet I always maintained an affinity for the character. I thought I was open minded, yet I find myself kinda rocked by the whole thing. It was a brave move on the part of the showrunners and it more than makes sense in the context of the story...so why is it bothering me so much? Anyone else feeling confused (maybe not the best choice of words there) by the revelation. I mean, I knew that Flint was 'in love' with Thomas as a progressive mind...much like his other salon 'apostles' but yeah...I didn't expect it to go there. And in a post episode interview the showrunners used the term 'homosexuality'. Well, isn't Flint really bisexual? Not that there needs to be a distinction. He was seduced by both of them. And continues to be by 'Miranda Barlow'. Is it ok that I am so challenged by this revelation? I am not swearing off the show, nor do I like it any less...and I think my love for the show has been more than obvious throughout.
Anyone who is watching...gimme a ruling here. Am I outta line by being shocked?
Thanks. No, not going 'Gay Cooties', so I think I am ok. It just really changes the character and your perception of him. You helped me to see that, so thanks. I always wondered why Eleanor Guthrie seems to be as attracted to Flint as she is to Vane, but they only ever show her acting out with Vane. I do think they need to revisit that and pencil in why she is so compelled by him in light of the revelation.
Ok, tabling that...yes I agree with you. I savor this show...saving weeks at a time to indulge in it. And, like last season, I will rewatch like a madman(I love the way they pronounce that word on the show) until it comes back. I was sad to see the domestic ratings have been lesser than Outlander. It really is a tremendous show. Have to ask you...has INXSerrrrrrrrrr John Silver worked his magic on you yet. First season was dicey, but he has become terribly charming to me over the course of this season. So much stuff to love here, The Rackham/Bonney/Max triangle...hell Rackham alone is probably the most fascinating character on the show...quietly, sneakily. Cannot support his sleight of Bonney...despite the fact that she had it coming really...it still seemed like a betrayal. And now Billy. I am glad they laid that card(the pardons) out on the table. That was too obvious. This show is sooooooooo delicately weaved. I want to finish 7/8 because , if I am not mistaken there are only 1 or 2 left.
Already renewed for a 3rd season...so that is guaranteed. And the show is apparently an international hit...but the domestic ratings being soft is cause for concern. Starz is soooooo close to the vest with their numbers. Now I have to investigate. Thanks for the ruling mmmcammy. I feel better now.
I very much disliked John Silver at first, and suddenly he's one of my favorite characters. I still don't know how or why it happened, but I ain't mad at it. Him and Max could turn out to be a real force together. I totally agree about Jack Rackham as well....he's definitely my favorite character. Billy's pretty high up there as well.
I'd say more about the characters mentioned but I'm totally caught up on the episodes and don't want to spoil anything. Just know episodes 7 and 8 and fan-****ing-tastic.
There's only 2 episodes left and I'm expecting some damn good television!
Thank you for holding back...I am sooooooo anticipating getting home and getting caught up. We shall talk more.
BTW, I think Silver came off as cocky right from the start. It was a little hard to take, but him getting his ass kicked a couple dozen times has endeared him to me. He is ever the pragmatist and he is almost too honest for a pirate. His teeth are still a little too pretty though.
I haven't read Tresure Island since the Classic Comics of my youth...but if this a prequel doesn't Silver kill his 'mentor' Cap'n Flint in the source material. I wonder when that happens. I know you didn't care for Flint...but he really is the lynchpin of the series. The other characters exist as complimentary to his 'force of nature' personality. I worry that without him there would be a void. It really is a deep/complex character and Toby Stephens manages a lot of nuance behind the perpetual ball of barely controlled rage. The scene where his secret was exposed while he was trying to win over his father figure, the Commodore(?) was exceptional. Go back and rewatch it. I rewound it a few times. With just his facial expression he managed to do so much. If anyone else is reading this...WATCH THIS SHOW!!!!!!
