All Things: TELEVISON

Emma Stone, Jonah Hill, Cary Fukunaga Teaming for TV Series ‘Maniac’

Brace yourselves, folks, because this one is almost too good to be true. Filmmaker Cary Fukunaga kicked off a longform storytelling trend by directing every episode of the tremendous first season of HBO’s True Detective, and after a sojourn back to feature film territory with his gripping drama Beasts of No Nation it appears that Fukunaga is ready to head back to TV in a big way. Per THR, Emma Stone and Jonah Hill are set to star in a dark comedy series called Maniac, for which Fukunaga is set to likely helm every episode.

The show is based on a 2014 Norwegian series about a mental institution patient who escapes to a fantasy world in his brain where he’s a hero and everything’s grand. Already this offers a number of visual opportunities, and given the immense skill of Fukunaga as a filmmaker, this is a fantastically promising fit.
Paramount TV and Anonymous Content are currently shopping the project to various outlets, seeking a straight-to-series order for potentially two seasons, with Fukunaga likely onboard to direct each installment.

One of my favorite books of all time. Absolutely fascinating and atmospheric. Curious how far they'll take it and the subject matter though. Hope it's good, but I'm betting not.

TNT is the part that scares me. They tend to make very bland, family friendly programming.

So, Hap'n'Leonard...

Must've dug it because I started watching ep1, and before I knew it, I was done with the first 3. It sure feels right. The relationship between the 2, the language/rhythm, the femme fatales...

But, still not entirely feeling Purefoy as Hap. Getting there...but he needs a little more 'world beat the crap outta me' to him. Still a little too...heroic? Likeable?

The disdain for the hippies is there...primo Lansdale...certainly has his voice down.
Michael K Williams is terrific(as usual)...and perfect as Leonard.

And man, does Christina Hendricks know how to put the strain on a set o' shirt buttons, and my pants...sheesh!

Like the 6 episode model. Feels about right.

**** just got real in the fourth ep! :O

I have been enjoying the series. The series did start slow, but I think that it's was important to set the tone and the characters, which the series has done. Things have really started happening now and I can't wait to see how it ends.

Slow...come on, you read some of the books haven't you. It's not slow, it's that East Texas vibe. The lack of guys falling forward while an explosion goes off behind them does not mean it's slow. Come on Orph, you're better than that.

I haven't started watching Hap and Leonard yet, because my DVR decided to skip a bunch of episodes. However, while I was stranded at McCarran Airport this week, I was able to read all of Savage Season and about half of Mucho Mojo, so I can't wait to dig into the TV series.
