I enjoyed listening to Jessye Norman while I was younger and found her voice perfect for the operatic roles she had at the time...especially the Wagnerian roles...

But as Carmen??? That was like casting Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Sugar Plum Fairy... It really isn't her fault though...and I have the feeling that Carmen ruined her career from that point on...

The worst thing is that Carmen lives or dies with the soprano lead...and I have yet to find one that hasn't grated on my nerves... It's either too heavy a voice or too light...and have never heard a perfect Carmen in my lifetime...

My dad was a musician who played, among other instruments, the drums. Yesterday, my mom told me the story of how she got angry at my dad one time, because he called long distance to England to try to get Ginger Baker on the phone.
Apparently, he nearly succeeded.
