Longtime ESPN host John Saunders dead at age 61

wow. Sad. He was one of the hallmarks of ESPN's golden age.

Sad, sad loss as he was very classy. Tough 8 months for ESPN/ABC as they lost Tirico and Berman and now Saunders. These are tried and true and trusted personalities. They will have a hard time replacing them all. Tirico on the Olympic coverage has been a pleasant surprise.

ESPN is transitioning though. Going from personality driven to cut & paste/Plug & Play model. They also cut Colin Cowherd loose as well as the guy who was Grantland. Like it's parent companies, it is now a multi-billion dollar conglomerate. Nobody is bigger than the logo. Saunders passing is a loss, not only because of his work, but because he brought credibility to the network. Guy was a hockey player...and was terrific back when ESPN didn't marginalize the sport. Seemed like a wonderful man from the sincere comments from his peers. 2016 continues to take some of our best.
