Alt jazz...
Ok, so just like the Punk thread I somehow missed this and once again am late to the party.
As far as "what is Alt?" I always considered it music that is sorta close to what was mainstream but not quite. Or really cool/different music that the big radio stations won't play because "Our mainstream top 40 audience might not like this or think it is too weird." So by that definition there is still Alt-Music around today. Music you rarely hear on places like KROQ, the so called ATL-98.7, my104.3 ect ect. And if you do hear it it is 6 months to year after the song was actually released.
I actually, on more than one occasion, heard one of those stations declare "Check out this great brand new song by......." Yeah, I heard that last year on KCRW.
So here is one that I heard a few months ago and I doubt it will ever be played on the other stations..
This Danish singer, Agnes Obel goes medieval on us. String instruments, monkish sounding backup singers, dark mood.
Live....
I could be Flipper, I could be Ecco!
I could be a Rummy, I could be a Wino!
I could be Wasted, I could be Blasted!
I could be Wrong, I could be Right!!

Outside of punk shows, so many LA shows in the '80s included Oingo Boingo, Fishbone, or these guys?
"Hey, I like music, too!"
(Most obscure s*** ever, inbound)

Well, if that's the definition...
