That’s simply not true!Kinda what you'd expect from a 21 year old #2 overall pick.
When going thru the NHL drafts from 2005 and 15 years forward to the Byfield draft year (yes, I have no life…) you clearly see that it isn’t a sure thing that 2nd overall picks play like Byfield is doing right now when they just have turned 21:
-2005, Bobby Ryan, did but quickly dropped of badly.
-2006, Jordan Staal, never did.
-2007, James Van Riemsdyk, never did.
-2008, Drew Doughty, did and still do!
-2009, Victor Hedman, did not yet but later on.
-2010, Tyler Seguin, did and continued to be good but maybe not great.
-2011, Gabriel Landeskog, did and still do.
-2012, Ryan Murray, never did.
-2013, Aleksander Barkov, did not yet but later on.
-2014, Sam Reinhart, did not until his 9th season.
-2015, Jack Eichel, did and still do.
-2016, Patrik Laine, did and still do.
-2017, Nolan Patrick, did not and likely will never do.
-2018, Andrei Svechnikov, did and still do.
-2019, Kaapo Kakko, did not.
So of the 15 second overall picks only 7 (less than half) played as good or better than Byfield does right now at this stage of his career.
So no, you shouldn’t ”expect” this kind of play from a just turned 21 year old. You can hope for it, but if you get it consider yourself lucky! As we are right now and it’s great seeing Byfield putting it all together!
