Problem with this philosophy, though, is that as the 3rd highest paid on the team, and personally accounting for 10.2% of the payroll, PLD is being paid to be great, not merely good. I do agree, though, his true value is going to shine come playoff time as he will play a significant role in getting us past the 1st round.

The "good" Kopitar spoke about is relative to one's ability. And usually you hope the average cap is as close to the average talent level as possible and the team is bult well in order to maximize the player's fit into the system.

He needs to drink 3 Gallons of Whole Milk a week, eat nothing but raw meat and eggs, and crush the weight room like his life depends on it. All the while watching videos of Wendel Clark in his prime. That should help him develop a bit of a mean streak, which may be the only thing he’s lacking right now.
 
Can you believe that some fools even said that the Kings "should have" drafted Stutzle over Byfield? I remember one guy who bragged about watching hockey games for "almost 60 years" (as if that made him some kind of expert). He posted here that you "should always choose the finished product over the project" when drafting high, or something like that. He must have been high when he wrote that. I broke the one hard and fast rule I have, which is to remember that I'm just a fan, not some expert analyst. Byfield is making me look like a total idiot, and I richly deserve it. But enough of the self-flagellation. What a season the kid is having! And props to those of you who never lost faith in him.

I recall folks, even just a few weeks ago in this very thread wishing the Kings would have "dumped" Byfield last year when he had premium value. Saw him only has a big and fast skater. Complained that the Kings spent the #2 draft pick on a guy that was to be a 1F forechecker. Saw drafting Byfield as a total failure by management. Great failure Blake.
 
Byfields Current Stats and Projected Points. At the beginning of the year I thought him going 20/20 would have been an acceptable marker for development. He is well on his way. Can only imagine what he will do with more confidence and man strength in a couple of seasons. Were lots of Tage Thompson comparisons and note he didnt breakout until 24/25 years old with his 47 goal season coming at 25 years old.
