Byfield

“This isn’t right at all” in your world, my friend. Other people have also posted the same thoughts I expressed in this thread. We know you are 55‘s #1 supporter and that’s cool. But you are over-hyping a less than effective game by all 3 guys on that line last night. I don’t believe Moore is a good fit for those guys.
Hey I’ve been Dubois’ #1 cheerleader since the trade too. And I’ll just say it’s nice to see everyone else catch up. There’s plenty of room on the bandwagon.

Kopitar Byfield and Moore will be just fine together. Last night was not a great game for them as a unit and they still generated a goal and should’ve had at least one more.

Did the Kempe make the PLD or did the PLD make the Kempe is like the chicken and the egg. Tho I will say PLD obviously looked good with 2 assists, but I'll be damned if I've ever seen a coach have to shake up almost the entire roster to find a player a line, and it's 1 game. We'll see how long the changes last though I do hope it works. This team has a slight identity crisis atm IMO.

Do we not recall the Kevin Fiala Kopitar disaster class of 2022? Those two mix like oil and water. Todd finally admits it after half a season and Fiala gets shuffled around to everyone from Lizzo to Kupari before ending the regular season next to Vilardi and Byfield.

Some players just don’t fit where you predict them to once the game whistle blows.

Tonka might be a better fit with Kopi and Q in the long run… I hated seeing the Danault/Moore dyad broken up.

Was at the game last night and tried to watch PLD away from the puck as much as i could. I have a few thoughts on what i saw last night.

• I definitely think PLD needs higher skill players to be effective offensively. He made a number of small dishes that bottom 6 guys generally dont take advantage of. This is somewhat unfortunate, but also (at least to me) is somewhat comforting in that there's a path to remedy some of the production issues. If you're best asset involves carrying the puck into teh zone and finding guys for scores, you need guys capable of getting to the right areas (both speed and IQ), and capable of scoring. Kempe was that guy last night (and hopefully a guy liek arvidsson can be that as well).

• PL definitely looked more engaged overall, and i think having Kempe on his line was a bit of a motivator. I saw PLD skate harder than ive seen all season. It wasnt every shift, but there were several instances that were noticeable. That was also comforting to see, but again, the flipside being a bit of an effort issue. You simply cannot ignore the fact that he needs to give a more consistent effort. And that effort cant be dependent on who his wingers are.

• I do not think there is any issue with PL still figuring out the system, and i dont think that was ever much of an issue, despite how i felt earlier in the season. He knows where to be. He knows what the team expects. Whatever comment coach made about "still adjusting", im convinced it has everything to do with his role on the team and not anything to do with systems. He's adjusting to not being the guy. And he's adjusting to playing with a rookie and a bottom 6'er (up until now). I hope he can learn to take amore team oriented approach to his mental prep and his in game effort. The team really needs him to step up, especially now that they've been struggling. This is why you go for depth over paying out the nose for a truly elite top star. You hope that you have at least a couple lines going on any given night.

People have been saying for a couple months now that it's no big deal that he was "adjusting", because the team was winning. Well.. we aren't winning anymore.

* sorry for posting this in the QB thread, but i saw the PLD discussion and felt like dovetailing in on that.

Wondering if it is a good time to try flipping Byfield and PLD. Centers should be the hardest working forward on each line, and PLD is not that. He is very good, however, when it comes to deflections which would be a boon with Kempe not being afraid to shoot (and actually get it on net). On the flip side, Byfield has stalled a bit from a point perspective so why not give him a chance to take on more responsibility at center and see what he can do in his natural position.

The more the season goes on, the more Byfield looks like our future L1 Center and until PLD can give 100% effort, and be a leader on his line, he should be moved to wing. Again, today, he stood and watched while Kaliyev got mauled by two Panthers after the whistle. He just doesn't really seem to be the leader any of our lines need right now.

Could someone explain to me why Byfield doesn't get any shifts in OT?

Let me try to explain this to you.

Well you see, the players are the players and they play the game. Byfield is a player and he also plays the game. Now, if you look at OT, well that is a game within the game. For the game within the game, which is OT, you need a players player to play their best hockey. Once Byfield the player becomes a player he will see more time playing in the game within the game which is OT.

I Hope that this has clarified things for you. I tried to make it as clear (as mud) as I could.

tough call. While i thnk Byfield can and should still be headed to the center position, asking him to try and resurrect that 3rd lien mid season during a slump seems like a huge gamble. Ideally i think that's a move you try starting next season, with an entire preseason involved to help get him more comfortable there.

I also still am trying to rectify all of the scouting reports i read about PLD vs. what im actually seeing. A lot of praise for him carrying the puck and dishing, and we just dont see as much of that here. He doesn't look nearly as dangerous with the puck as i was expecting. I have said before that i think he needs more skilled guys on his wing, because i do see him make some really slick passes at times, and ive seen him try a few that just never get taken advantage of by a guy like grundstrom (no disrespect to him).

TLDR: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ...but im leaning towards not.

When this trade happened many Jets fans were pissed off. They stated that PLD was their best player last year. Especially when he lead the team in scoring half way through the season. Then, the entire team fell apart, PLD got injured and well, what ever. I do not recall any Jets fans arguing the point the point that PLD was their best overall forward for the first half. Where is that guy? That is the 8.5 million dollar question.

It took him a full season and a good scorer on his wing to really start clicking with the Jets. Through his first 40 games he was about at the same place point wise where he is with the Kings.

I was slightly surprised at his celebration after the second one, but if it gets his confidence rolling we are ok.
