Elliotte Friedman: Chychrun May Be Available

If that's all their ask is, it's beyond a no-brainer for the Kings.

Their pick of Turcotte, Vilardi, or even Clarke
2022 1st
Any other prospect not named Byfield or Kaliyev (although evaluations of Chromiak and Fagemo could change that).

If I'm the Kings I'd at least try to find a way to avoid trading a defenseman or rather try to keep Clarke if possible. Not to the point of holding up the deal mind you...but the franchise isn't loaded at that position.

So if the ask Marek says is true then I would look at Kaliyev as being a possibility to move instead of Clarke. But who knows what the Yotes want in return....maybe they'll want a defensmen.

On thing though I highly doubt Vilardi will be involved. It's not that the Kings would move him but I'm guessing his value isn't all that high at the moment.

I'd also be very curious what Anaheim would want to offer. That would be interesting....

I would put both Chromiak and Helenius on the "untouchable" list.

Kings actually are loaded at RD. For that reason, I would definitely offer AZ Clarke... anyone not named Durzi at this point.

And a good reason for Arizona to try and squeeze just a bit more out of either the Kings or the Ducks . . . just to keep Chychrun out of the hands of the other.

With Chromiak I could maybe, sort of see it (he's got a lot of offensive potential but hardly a lock for the NHL), but Helenius? He's projecting to be a bottom-six guy if he makes it. He has very limited offensive potential.

They are not loaded at RD by any stretch of the imagination; they have several decent prospects none of whom are projecting to be in the top half of the Kings' defensive pairings. In fact, their defensive prospect list is pretty skimpy if you are looking at the top 3. They have no "Grade A" prospects outside of Clarke, period. Of all the Kings' prospects, he probably has the highest upside outside of Byfield.

Really? I think JT has the right view that almost nobody is untouchable. I think he's only got Byfield on the list. I can see that. I'd really like to keep Clarke because we're so shallow on defenseman talent. That said, Durzi has been very impressive. His stretch pass game is translating from when he was in juniors and with the Leafs org. And his defense has been adequate. And we've got a big of a logjam on RD with Doughty followed by Roy (his numbers are very good even if most of the board doesn't see it) and Durzi. I'm not sure what the Kings go when Walker returns and Clarke is pushing for a position too.

If the Kings can play half as good as they did last night, Blake needs to make the move. Chychrun would be huge in terms of further stabilizing the defense and we'd be have the look of a playoff team.

Do the Kings have the cap space to take Chychrun without sending at least a smaller contract back?

/edit - im seeing 4.4mil in cap space. Chychrun's cap is 4.6 so looks like not a big issue, although that would make any other moves at the deadline nearly impossible.

Which might be OK. I would look at any Chychrun deal AS the "deadline" move...because beyond that really only true Cup contenders get involved and the Kings are far from that. This is a move for the future....

Sorry. I guess I should have said that Blake should try to keep those two players out of the package.

Chromiak has all the attributes of a scoring RW - something in very short supply in the current system.

Helenius is just a gut feeling that he may somehow become a diamond in the rough.

And "loaded at RD" didn't mean the Kings are loaded with extraordinary talent. Again I apologize for poor word choice. I probably should have said "log-jammed at RD". Still, some of those kids are damn good players albeit not offensive dynamos.

If Clarke is necessary to getting the deal done, then do it, Rob.

I should have said "I have Chromiak and Helenius on my personal untouchable list". I just think both those guys have NHL attributes.

I should have said "overloaded" as in population, not talent, my friend. Sorry. Posting before coffee.

I agree with all but the "If the Kings can play half as good as they did last night, Blake needs to make the move." If he can, Blake must make the move regardless of how the Kings play. This is a young defenseman, he'll be in his prime for the next 5-7 seasons, when the kids will fully take over the team and Kopitar & Co. are retired. This is a long-term move that would set up the team for years, so it should not depend on what happens this season.

i agree, but blake said recently that he feels like the team is in a position to look at avenues to improve the team from the outside. Point blank said they'd likely be looking to improve the team at the deadline. Obviously Chychrun would be a huge get, but at the same time, i feel like this is a trade they should probably try to pull off now, rather than wait. But this would make basically any other improvements impossible. Even if he just wanted to bring in a depth/vet guy, they'd be unable. Which is fine, cant have everything.

Curious why you think that? We have enough assets to make a few moves, imo.

I would 100% absolutely sell high on Chromiak right now. Could turn out to be a total non factor in the NHL, the odds are still definitely against him.

the discussion was about cap space, not assets. If we trade for Chych, we will basically be right up against the cap.

Yeah, but that changes in an instant if you trade them Maatta or give someone a 4th rounder to take him.

Also, if they want a sniper wing rental the trading team would retain.

im not sure they take maatta for a 4th. Additionally, if we give up a defenseman in the trade, and then also send maatta as well, we're suddenly pretty light on the blueline. Certainly there are options, but that's additional assets going out and potential trades to make.
