I assume a contract extension for Kempe will be announced soon but if he goes into the season with no extension will Holland ride out the season and take his chances on signing him as a Hail Mary after the playoffs?
As far as what is public about this I gather Kempe wants to stay, the Kings want to keep him, and I cannot fathom that this doesn’t get done in the off-season (and probably fairly quickly).I assume a contract extension for Kempe will be announced soon but if he goes into the season with no extension will Holland ride out the season and take his chances on signing him as a Hail Mary after the playoffs?
I'd be very concerned if Kempe is not extended before the season begins. Looks like Holland is focused on getting this extension on the books quickly. As far as what is public about this I gather Kempe wants to stay, the Kings want to keep him, and I cannot fathom that this doesn’t get done in the off-season (and probably fairly quickly).
If this doesn’t get done before the season I would be slightly concerned.
But I honestly don’t think it’s even possible that it doesn’t happen.
I would too. The Kings track record with players where the extension is very close to being signed has been terrible. This (Forecasting a Gavrikov Contract Extension, Plus LA Kings Trade Deadline Notes) is the latest example.I'd be very concerned if Kempe is not extended before the season begins. "New Kings GM Ken Holland, who took over from Rob Blake after he wasn't brought back, recently said that negotiations are being ramped up up with Kempe.
We're going to get ramped up here. Obviously, I'd like to sign him to an extension; he's an important guy on the team. I believe he wants to stay. J.P. Barry said he wants to stay. I did talk to Adrian the day I was announced as manager, and got really good feelings from him. So, I've gotta get going on that front. Certainly, I want to get him signed to a long-term deal. He's an important part of the team."

Kings on the Verge of Signing Star Winger to Possible $80 Million Contract
The Los Angeles Kings are reportedly close to a contract extension with Adrian Kempe, who could earn as much as $80 million on his next deal.www.houseofhockey.net
I'm down for a good doom scroll. Flesh this out, Kempe moves on. Now what?I would too. The Kings track record with players where the extension is very close to being signed has been terrible. This (Forecasting a Gavrikov Contract Extension, Plus LA Kings Trade Deadline Notes) is the latest example.
I would suggest removing all sharp objects from the immediate vicinity of any LGK'ers.I'm down for a good doom scroll. Flesh this out, Kempe moves on. Now what?
Laff gonna be looking at that Jackson Blake contract like
8 x 5.65m
Would you give that to Laff? Because his long term market has just been set.
I would be inclined to match that. 5.5 is like the 4 million of the past decade.
Jesus, that's quite a contract for a guy with one solid season and no proven upward trajectory in the NHL...
I'd try to convince Laff for less, maybe 7@4,5m, but even at 8@5.6m that would mean he'd be the new, sliiiightly more expensive (cap % wise, in 3 years) Trevor Moore...but for longer term.
The Kings simply can't afford to lose their homegrown talent to the UFA market, because they can't get much on the UFA market themselves. It's why the Kings always overpay to keep their own stars and considering even Ken the Great can't help them in this department, they will have to overpay further.
9 years of team control is more valuable than the 5.1M cap hit for the Canes. Even if Blake has maxed out his potential as a 21 year old 17 goal scorer, it’s worth the gamble.Jesus, that's quite a contract for a guy with one solid season and no proven upward trajectory in the NHL...

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, typed the atheist.

I’d love to see Laf locked up for 8 seasons. I really doubt he’d sign it but if he’s happy in LA and he wants to never have to worry about money again for the rest of his life 45 Million guaranteed is a great deal for both sides.Exactly why I'd be okay with giving the exact same deal to Laff. And he's actually shown tangible progress over 2 seasons, while Blake has a much smaller body of work.
That plus Mikey's deal would be 2 very nice, long term, team + cap friendly deals to build a leading / supporting cast around.
He also left a lot of money on the table over his career. Doubt we see too many players like that - those we do are likely Captain quality.I’d love to see Laf locked up for 8 seasons. I think back to the 6 year 19M deal Dustin Brown signed coming off his rookie deal and it set the tone for his Kings career and was a building block for the Cup winning teams.
I don't think he's going to play for any other team than Pittsburgh. He should finish his career there and have his jersey retired as a Penguin. So let him stay there for all he's worth. He's earned it.
Going to side with the Flyers on this one. All I see is this:
