FA 2025 (lets get the discussions in one thread)

Is it tho? Back when we grabbed Mitchell and Scuderi, the salary cap was ~ $60M. It’s now 50% higher, and the floor is $10M above the cap from back then.

So to compare them, what percentage of your cap to you dedicate to a player? Doughty is about 13%. Ceci is 5%, Anderson 4.6%, Dumoulin 4.4%, Edmundson 4.2%, Clarke is 2%. Total for the group is about 33%.
It’s certainly going to get more manageable as the cap goes up. The problem is Holland gave a worse contract to Ceci. You can justify either Ceci or Edmundson but there’s no way both guys should be guaranteed roster spots for the next 3-4 years.

Starting 26-27 5 Defensemen on the roster have NTCs. Come on man.

So what I am gathering with the current moves in free agency over the last couple of years points to a massive failure by Blake to draft and develop NHL level D prospects.
Clarke is their only positive while the last wave have moved on (Walker, Roy, Spence).
There is not a single D man on Ontario ready or talented enough to challenge for the 7th spot on our current roster. Kirsanov may be their best if he does stay over (is in development camp for the first time).
So this has lead to the deals we just signed and the fact they are multi year contracts tells me they don't expect any of the last few drafts to be developed for several years.
Angus Booth seems to have NHL potential. Maybe 2 years away. Dvorak is the wild card. He’s probably 3 years away if he’s ever NHL ready.

Jared Woolley and Brzustewicz both have NHL potential but again 3+ years away.

Not that anybody cares but the Kings signed potential call ups Cole Guttman who played for the Blackhawks and Ice Hogs and Taylor Ward who scored his first NHL goal for the Kings last year.

Samuel Fagemo signed with the Jets.

Guttman is WAY too small. If he wore lifts, he’d be Blake Lizotte.

Upon further analysis the theme of the signings was "veteran beef". They must have felt the team is undersized and wanted to get bigger (some will say slower). But Perry, Ceci, Dumolin, and Armia are all over 6'3" and 200+ lbs.

Perry 6'3" 208 lbs
Armia 6'3" 216 lbs
Ceci 6'3" 210 lbs
Dumolin 6'4" 207 lbs

Which explains the 3 and 4 year contracts to Dumoulin and Ceci.
A couple of injuries happen we got nothing capable of playing even NHL average.

And now signing the 6'4" defenseman Samuel Bolduc from the Islanders. A decent and big defenseman to have in reserve in the AHL.

I am okay with 3 of the 4 UFA signings. Good moves considering.....

That being said, Cody Ceci is at best a serviceable 3rd pairing guy that can eat minutes. Should not be making over 2.5mil per year IMO. Consider that over the past 3 playoffs he has been a whopping -5, -5 and -6 while playing for the Oilers and Stars. 4 x 4.5mil for that?

Until Taylor Ward officially retires from baseball and the Angels, I can't take him seriously as an NHL player.
