Kempe Contract Watch Thread

Video posted above leaves me both confused and frustrated. What the hell does Holland/Luc have in mind? Stalling on the contract has already cost the organization millions. I believe they are hoping to orchestrate a big trade rather than pay Juice the $11 to $11.5 million. That seems to make sense if one believes management initially tried lowballing their best player.
The only thing I can figure is the team has an internal hard cap and paying Kempe market value would put them above that cap. There’s just no good justification.

Paying a 30 year old winger 10+ for 8 years is foolish.
You’ve watched this team literally never sign a free agent winger of Kempe’s caliber over its near 60 year history and you’re still going to say this? Never mind that the cap is set to explode with impending expansion. Never mind that there’s no danger of losing out on another player by retaining Kempe. Never mind that he’s the best player on the team.

What’s the point?

Necas re-signs with Colorado.

8 years x 11.5M
One more contract that basically just IDs Kempe’s number for Holland.

The interesting thing from the video you shared is the question this hold up is all about bonuses. I can’t imagine why that actually makes it more complicated when the option to just pay 11.5 per is right there. Has to be some weird stuff with Luc “We have a superstar - it’s Adrian Kempe” Robitaille. Great.

I don't think there is any question some team out there would offer AK 13 million in the summer.

Kings are *probably* around 11-11.5 right now, and who knows if they are even offering 8 years?

Free agency has to start looking more and more attractive as the days pass.

What's the freakin' holdup?

And the Kings won 2 cups not signing expensive free agents. The reality is this team is going nowhere in the near future and they have few assets to start a rebuild. How many great years to Kempe have? 3-5? Face it, the rebuild failed and signing Kempe means black hole team for years to come. The Kings won't do this because rebuilds mostly fail but the current path is all downhill from here.

You can’t sign an offer that hasn’t been made.
And you know this how? Not saying one has, or has not been made. You sound like you are stating facts, so please share the proof of this offer.

Now, after reading my post again, I did not mean to make it sound like there was an offer. I was being hypothetical. I was just trying to say sign a darn deal already at 10.5/11m.

Necas is "possibly" the better player (not by much) and is a few years younger. It would make sense that Kempe is worth near that contract. Kempe could be looking for a bit more though. Kopi comes off the books, Drew only has one year left after this one at his 12m.

If we all think back a number of years, we will remember that Kopi and Drew got some "Top" contracts for the time. Not just a reasonable deal, but BIG deals. Kempe has been underpaid for a while and may be looking for his top dollar contract as well. Kings could be trying to offer a "reasonable/good" deal. This would have them "not close". If that is the case, this could go on for a while. Maybe Kempe decides he has had enough and leaves just like Gavy did last year.

Who the heck knows. We are all just speculating here. Today, the only thing we know for sure is that he is still slated to be a UFA come 7/1/26.

Pagnotta said there have been no offers. Holland and Luc are up now.

I did not mean to imply that they did. I was just saying sign a dang deal already, and that 10.5 and 11m is a reasonable offer per what Necas just signed for.

The Mayor says a deal is done, just need to work out details/structure etc. Pagnotta is saying nothing offered. Neither of these clowns know any more than we do. I would not put much stock into what either of them say.

I think Holland is trying to concoct his own version of the PLD trade.😁
