Good comparison, also reminds me of the flashes of greatness of Frolov--but all too Inconsistent.Kempe always reminded me of a young Kopitar, without the heart.
We have plenty of kids who should be able to provide what Kempe does coming up soon
Name one.
Hell, Kempe can barely do what Kempe does consistently
He and Roy (getting better) are some of the only consistent roster I roll my eyes at when they on the ice (and Brown [awful]).. sometimes they do something interesting and it's very shocking, but most the time it's like.. ugh. Kempe has been better this year IMO though.. so that's good.
Interesting. To me, Kempe has been the most entertaining forward on the Kings to watch all season. Doesn't mean he doesn't have his flaws but he has taken a huge leap forward this year (as you said). When we drafted him I figured he'd be a smooth skating finesse player but he's added some power forward elements to his game this season and has really evolved. Hopefully he can still grow a bit more.
Considering that he is ARB eligible, I went with trade at deadline since I think the Kings will be nowhere near the playoffs. Kempe is going to rightfully want more than his QO. If he goes to ARB, he will probably get it too.
We have plenty of kids who should be able to provide what Kempe does coming up soon, and we need to make space for them too. It never hurts to have an abundance of potential talent in the wings, as long as we get around to doing something with that potential talent.
I’ll add that last year was actually Kempe’s first consistent year. He was on a 20-goal pace over 82 games and solidified his special teams play. This year has, so far, been another step forward. His checking and defensive game has evolved with a consistently active stick. He doesn’t have games where he’s floating. Plus he was bit handicapped by being forced into a center role he never belonged in save for temping for Carter that year.
I don’t know about 30 but I think 25 goals is doable. If he reaches that I think a longer extension is the right move. I understand people wanting to wait it out, to an extent I’m there too. But if this season keeps on pace for him it should be regarded as his second good year, not his first. Significant difference there.
This is just personal grousing but I truly believe that you max your kopis, Drew's and quickies, everyone else gets three years max, and that's if they are clicking on all cylinders.

We should have extended him in December. The price just keeps going up. The PP1 would have zero zone entries without Kempe lugging the puck in.
I think offer Kempe the same deal as AI.
Kempe is playing like he wants and deserves a big deal. And he can get better if the supporting cast continues to do so as well.
He's easily a 6 million a year player right now.
It's going to take 6x5 or 5.5x6, something in that range.
Seems like a pretty good comparable to start off with...
