Super Star
It’s almost impossible to use McDavid as a central marketing figure because he’s completely devoid of a personality. This is what that clown David Staples is saying, with all his weird “jungle rules” blather. He’s so close to getting it…and also miles and miles away.
My favorite part of the article though is that McDavid “makes everyone richer” as he is “one of the few widely recognized stars in the U.S.”
Last season the Dangle pod boys were talking about the NHL won’t market McDavid as their face because he’s too pouty and salty. To the extent the casual U.S. fan tunes into watch random hockey, it’s not the Oilers he/she is looking for.
Contrast that with the Dodgers/MLB use of Shohei Ohtani as a marketing centerpiece in the US even though he rarely speaks English. He lets his game do the talking and he’s got a very affable/quirky personality when he isn’t being a stone cold killer on the field.
The casual sports fan wouldn’t recognize Connor McDavid if he were pumping their gas and that’s his fault.
