Kevin Fiala stretchered off the ice in Milano, FFS

What a terrible joke. Game was over.
Hoping it is the ankle and not something that is further complicated by his previous left leg injury (2017 broken femur). Uggh.

Well, that's really going to pull the rug from under the Kings when it comes to their playoff hopes; sucks that Fiala would suffer that devastating of an injury in the Olympics. On the other hand, his potentially season-ending injury (and it appears very likely) is going to put the Kings in better position of the upcoming draft. To me, losing Fiala is a bit of a dark blessing in disguise now that that means our Kings won't have to face the Coilers or Blights in the first round, especially the damn former. If it causes the Kings to miss the playoffs, well, quite frankly, I'm all for it.

That’s all he’s going to need.

And you look at the cash piece wrong. We’ve got cap space to take on a contract, which is just as valuable as a prospect.
I don’t think it’s the cash itself anyone is worried about. We know organizations carry insurance for exact instances like this, where a player gets injured, yet they have to continue paying his contract. Ownership has insurance to cover Kevin’s money, so an acquired player costing 7 mill is just a wash in terms of actual dollars.

The point is, to fill that $7.8 million of cap Space, Holland is going to have to trade future assets to bring a player in.. is that really what you want the Kings to be doing at this point? Spending extra future assets(and probably overpaying at that), for a chance to squeak into the playoffs and get bounced in the first round again?

No, I did not look at the cash piece wrong. I was making a point that in order for the Kings to spend it, they would have to spend much of their future assets, as that extra cash gets them nothing without spending what should be considered their "precious" assets.

Re spending assets to bring a player in, that’s a good point.
Unless a team is trying to get rid of a contract.

I agree mostly with your points about not losing assets but the cap space is an asset if the situation warrants it. It is why three-team trades occur.
The cap space may allow the Kings to acquire a player, or more likely a #1 draft pick to take on salary.

That die was cast the minute they gave the baker $10M per for 3

I absolutely agree with you on that. There’s no rebuild coming in the next two years. But given the current climate of the league standings, there are a lot of buyers at the deadline, and not too many obvious sellers. Do you really want the Kings blowing their load this trade deadline, especially now that their second leading score is probably done for the season?

If Holland can make a hockey trade like the Panarin grab, I say fine, go for it, but that’s pretty rare at the trade deadline.

Now that I’m thinking about it, did we even have the cap Space to slot the baker onto the roster without clearing a fair bit of cap space anyways? This could be just perfect, with money in(Panarin), money out(Fiala), and basically substituting out a scorer for a better scorer(and hopefully a guy who’s not so prone to bad penalties and turnovers). This could actually be addition by subtraction, and then some extra addition on top of that..
