Kings sign Phillip Danault for 6 years

Hamilton was the worst deal of the day. He is a very good offensive option, but he is a supporting/secondary player and not a driver. Good hand to have, but he just got a #1 defender deal.

Danault IS an impact player, just not in the sexy ways some fans freak out about.

The biggest need on the Kings roster is on-ice accountability. Players who hold up to pressure and don't wilt, especially in the most vital areas of the ice. That could not be said of last years roster, or honestly any Kings roster in the past five years. No one player can change that for a team, but one player who gets key shifts in those vital situations can make a huge difference on a game. Danault is that type of player, accountability first and foremost. Players like that take pressure off of the rest of the roster and allow them to be slotted in positions to maximize their particular skills.

Free agency is always costly, its a tax in and of itself. Preference is to draft and develop, then trade if you have to, then sign as a last result.

Danault may not put up gaudy numbers, but he is going to be here longer than Anze, and he is the kind of player who will allow the kids to come in when ready with support and knowledge that they won't have to take on the harder assignments.

Edler is a safety net and perfect partner for Walker. He can play big, steady minutes, but likely won't have to. He's a good fit for Anderson and Bjornfot to study, while taking on bigger penalty kill minutes. Plus, at one year, he fits in perfectly with the likely next scenario...

The Kings now have the cover in place to take the next year to seek out a mega deal for a real impact defenseman, with plenty to spend in assets and cap. No need to rush into anything at all, this can be an extended search to overpay for exactly what they want.

In the meantime, the acquisitions of Arvidsson, Danault and Edler increase the speed, skill, tenacity and accountability of the current roster at just the cost of a couple picks. The table is much better set to introduce kids to the league as opposed to the disastererous tone of last year. Conservatively, their goal differential is likely around +50 to last year with these additions.

With the Brandt Clarke pick, the last few weeks have been incredibly positive.

Today truly feels like the franchise is finally turning a corner. Whether the organization arrived at this point because of Blake's master plan or he just lucked into it, Blake deserves some praise. He didn't sell the farm. He didn't hand out retirement contracts that hobbled the team's salary cap for years and years. He listened to his scouts and drafted the best prospects available, never rushed them into the league and we could be looking at a legitimate hockey factory. And with the moves he's made this summer the Kings should be fighting for a playoff spot next season.

Admittedly, I don't know much about Danault, and I only watched limited games in the 2021 playoffs, but I remember this:



That was a huge goal.

And, as a bonus, Danault is at least a decent size player at 6'1", 200 lbs, which happens to be the exact league average.

So far I like our picks. Blake seems to have a plan in place, which is really all I wanted from him at this point

I think you under rate Hamilton. He's been a Norris caliber D for awhile, and rates to stay one.

Exactly. Kings should 'buy once, cry once'. It's funny to get criticized for not seeing the small things that Danault brings when Dom's model predicts Hamilton to perform to the contract while Danault is a big overpayment.

I want the Kings to win too but yesterday's moved don't fix the overall roster problem.

So, this Danault guy. What's that all about? That's a big contract. Let me tell you a little bit about Philip Danault. I'm a Habs fan. We're going to miss Philip Danault.Your GM didn't make a mistake. If anything, you should be thankful for this signing. Your team just got better.
I was pissed too when we picked up Danault. We had traded Tomas Fleischmann and Dale Weise to Chicago for Danault and a 2nd rounder. Understand that Dale Weise was practically a folk hero in Montreal at that time. He only scored big goals for us and played "the right way". I was furious that we'd traded him and who was this Danault kid?
Never a huge scorer in the QMJHL but a 1st round pick (albeit a late one with Chicago). Made the Canadian WJC squad. Strong two way game we were told, but that's not sexy when you're talking about a new player. The goals and assists weren't huge numbers anywhere along the line with this kid.
But Bergevin had drafted Danault while in Chicago and had seen something in him. That materialised quickly in Montreal. By the end of his 1st season he was our 1C (by default mostly to be fair. Our cupboard was bare).
His second full season he was hurt but still producing at 40 point pace and, yes, providing noticeably good defence. I liked him.
But year 3 saw him line up with Tomas Tatar snd Brendan Gallagher to form what was probably the best line 5v5 in the NHL in terms of possession. Check the stats if you don't believe me. And, those possession stats are also the real numbers you want to look at when evaluating Danault.
He's a possession beast. He wins draws to start possession and just keeps the puck away from the opposing team with smarts and skill. So we got to like him for offence and defence once that line was formed. It was essentially our first line offensively and our shutdown line against the other team's best players.
But then the playoffs last year put him way over the top in my esteem. But, you say, he only had 1G and 4 A in 22 games!
That's right.
In a contract year (knowing that numbers of goals and assists turn into dollars in the summer) he forsook offence completely for the team. He focused solely on shutting down the likes of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, Blake Wheeler, Mark Stone and ol' Patches in Vegas. Even in the finals, Kucherov, Stamkos and Point combined for 4 G 5A in 5 games.
But that's really the big point and the thing that I'll miss and remember. This guy, when he needed the big numbers for a payday, said no and went into shutdown mode for the team.
He could win a Selke with you. He'll be another example for Byfield and Turcotte, along with Kopitar. He's a beauty and I wish him all the best in LA. Enjoy.

If there's one thing that is a constant through the years, LGK complaining about terms of contracts. Can't be excited about the player because it's all about whether he'll be worth his salary in year 6 of his contract. In 2027, there will probably be players making $15 million a year, and Danault will shut them down.
 
Reading this thread reminds of a bratty child that opened up a sweet gift Christmas morning that they are unhappy with and the parents need to explain to them why the gift is so good. Sorry kids, the gift wasn't on the top 5 big ticket items for Christmas this year along with the Beanie Babies, but it will be much more useful to you.

This wasn't quite like getting a GoBot when you asked for a transformer, more like getting a computer when you wanted a BMX bike.

Not at all, I have been a Whalers/Canes supporter for ages. Hamilton is a secondary player who provides terrific offense, but he is not a driver. Norris? Not even close, he has never even been a team's second best defenseman much less the best in the league.

In somewhat recent Kings terms he is similar to Jeff Carter. Obvious skill, great numbers, but not the sort of player who pushes his team forward or takes ownership of the play around him. He makes excellent use of what is provided to him. That is a very useful player to have, but he is not a top pairing, all situations player. Paying him $9 million per for 7 years is nearly twice what the Kings paid for Danault, and both are going to have similar impacts as tools, but not drivers.

For those thinking about the Kings targeting Saad, which we kinda figured was off the table now, he signed a 5 year deal with St. Louis today. $4.5MM AAV
